Her eyes were filled with sadness, aimed away as she stopped her hand, slightly gripping your shoulder.
"The monks will take you away tomorrow morning."

"What?!"
You immediately sit up, scanning her eyes only to be met with sadness and helplessness.

"I tried telling them I still had things I had to teach you, that you're most comfortable learning here, but they wouldn't listen. Not even Matriarch Hana could get through to them. Forgive me."

"They can't do that! Y-You're basically my only family left alive! They can't separate us now! You can't let this-"

She shushed you quickly, wiping your new tears away.
"My child, this is out of my control. You must learn to let go-"

"B-But-"

"Please. This is my last request while I'm still your mentor. Learn to accept and adapt to whatever challenge you will face. I know it's not easy, and I know it's a lot for you. But you're strong, you'll work through this."

You hold back your words and nod, hugging her tightly. She returns the embrace with just as much warmth, sighing, just as hesitant to let go of the last thread that tied her to her now deceased friend.

She fully knew you weren't her, but breaking the promise she had made decades ago hurt more than anything.

"Rest, I'll tell the others you don't feel well."
With that, she got up and left you alone, more torn than ever.

As the afternoon slowly faded to a starless, cloudy night, you awoke from your nap and looked outside, swallowing the lump in your throat.

With a deep breath, you nod harshly, almost in a way to reassure yourself.

This was the only way, right?
There's no other solution...

In a hurry, you grabbed the orange robe that was tied around you and used it as a coat, wrapping around your shoulders before soon propping yourself up on the open window, glider tightly in hand.

You were running away, and nobody could stop you.

The door opening immediately caught your attention, the confused expression on your master's face made you frown, but it was too late.

"Y/N, wait-!"
You hear Kana yell after you jumped, opening your glider as you flew as fast as you could.

Ignoring everyone and everything, you push aside the freezing air nipping at your skin and go as far your body can take you, not once even daring to glance behind you.

"F-Forgive me Kana-Sama..."
You huff as you keep gliding over the forest, the village you once lived in and called home, now long behind you as you chose to abandon it. It doesn't matter how tired you are, or how numb your body is, all you want is distance. And as soon as possible.

At one point, your body is too weak to keep going, and you collapse by a tree, panting as you're barely able to catch your breath, aching in pain at harsh landing, barely strong enough to crawl up and rest.

The stinging cold pierces your lungs, forcing you to focus on conserving your energy best you could, otherwise you would freeze to death.

You cry into your knees, exhausted as you grip your staff even tighter, thankful it wasn't broken before laying it down by your side.

Soon, the cold was too overwhelming for you, and you close your eyes, falling asleep as you silently cried.
