As we all know, John Laurens was gay. He did have a wife, but he married her out of pity after he accidentally got her pregnant.

John grew up surrounded by homophobia, which most likely only made it harder for him to accept his sexuality.

In case you're wondering why John slept with a woman in the first place: Francis Kinloch and John had recently broken up. John might have slept with Martha Manning either as a rebound or to attempt to distance himself from his sexuality, or both.

Also, John's daughter was named "Frances" which is the female spelling of "Francis." At first I believed that this was on purpose after Francis Kinloch, though John wasn't present at the birth of his daughter and most likely didn't have much say in what her name would be.

Point is he was gay and probably denied it for a while.
