"You want me to drive you home?"

"No," he rasped as he withdrew from the hug. "You should be here for him. You're his friend." He wiped his face with his sleeve and inhaled a few long breaths. He crept closer to Taehyung with hesitant steps and stood next to him. He passed his fingers through his hair as he gazed at him with a sad smile, his eyes drowned in tears. He crouched down and laid his head beside his.

"It's okay if you don't care," he croaked out, although he knew he couldn't hear him. "It's okay if you don't have a place for me." Tears started streaming down again, soaking his pillow. "I just want you to be okay. And know that you're not just my boss for me. I wish you could hear it, but that's okay too. At least I told you, even if you can't hear me." He drew a tiny, gentle kiss on the side of his head and straightened his posture.

"I'm not coming to work today," he stated as he took a final glance at the silver-haired boy.

"Don't worry about it. You should rest."

Jeongguk nibbled his lower lip, tasting the saltiness of his endless tears, and bent over the unconscious boy, his fingers merging into his hair. "Taehyungie hyung. I never got to call you that," he whispered to his ear. "Thank you. And I'm sorry." He smiled sadly and found the strength to pull back. He dragged his feet to the exit without looking back and disappeared.

If only he knew Taehyung was awake the whole time and heard every single word. If only he knew he actually shed tears for the first time in eight years. If only he knew the words he said pierced through him like a thousand knives. If only he knew what a wreck he left him when he walked out of his hospital room. But he didn't know anything, and Taehyung was too messed up to let him know.
