"Where to?"
He pulled me towards the bedroom hallway. "We're going to have a little chat with God."
"What?!" I stopped dead in my tracks, ripping my hand out of Colby's. He paused too but for a different reason, motioning for me to continue to follow him. "What the hell are we going to him for? And to talk about what?!"
He sighed as he walked up to me. "I know what you're thinking, and no, I'm not asking you to become queen. I want to see if I can talk God down into letting Corey out."
"Sam made himself clear."
"Just come with me?"
I glared at Colby for what felt like a really long time. At any moment up there, he could announce me as his... well, whatever I was, and I'd have to become the queen of hell before I'd even spent a year there. Eventually, however, I groaned and stormed passed him to get to my room where I tied my hair up into a quick bun. When I turned, he was just standing there waiting in the doorway.
"Fine. I'm coming, but don't expect me to offer to become queen."
"I don't expect you to become queen regardless." Colby slowly walked up to me, grabbing my hips instead of my hands and dragging me against his body. I had to look up at him as he lifted a finger to my chin. "I just want you to be my queen."
My heart actually fluttered.
"You know how you told me to stop being nice to the devil?" I whispered.
He nodded.
"Well you're going to have to stop being nice to the devil's queen, because she doesn't like blushing."
He smiled as he leaned down and kissed me. Something felt off about the kiss, like he didn't really mean it. That alone was almost enough to make me pull back but I put it down to how he was upset about Corey and let it happen. When I pulled back, however, I noticed the smile he was giving me wasn't the same as the others. Something was wrong with him. Hugely wrong.
He began leaning his forehead against mine stressfully, eyes closed. Just as I was about to speak, a red appeared all around me. I held my breath, waiting to be assaulted by pure white. It didn't take long. The golden gates of heaven stood there tall and proud with two guards on either side staring straight ahead until we appeared.
"We want to speak to God and Sam," Colby said flatly, staring at them like they were nothing. "And we'll break our way in regardless so I suggest you choose peace." The angel guards glanced at each other before nodding. They stood up straight and the gate began to open all on its own. I had a terrible feeling down in my stomach.
As we approached the open doors of heaven's castle, I could see more and more angels gathering in the area behind us. Everything about this screamed that it was a trap Colby was walking into. Something was seriously off.
"You aren't getting your friend back," God's voice boomed before we'd even entered the throne room. "You can try all you want, but unless you have a date for the queening ceremony in mind, then he's not- "
"I have a proposal." Colby's hand came harshly around my arm as he dragged me forward. I frowned at how aggressively he was handling me. What the fuck? That wasn't normal. "You give me Corey back, and you can have her." He thrusted me forwards.
"And why would I want her?"
"A black soul can be turned white. Besides, she has already been trained to fight."
My jaw literally dropped. Staring at Colby after he'd so coldly threw me to God, who appeared to be his worst nightmare of an enemy after everything just killed me inside. I couldn't describe it any other way. I felt dead...er than I already was.
"Why would you give up a girl suited so much to your... lifestyle?" God questioned suspiciously, watching me.
"She's new and I never wanted her to join my group." It felt like my heart had broken. Colby was going to change me for Corey? Just like that? I knew they'd been together for centuries and their group was super tight-knit, but I thought I'd finally fit in with them, especially when Colby and I became whatever the hell we were. Nothing any more, that was for sure.
"Bring the prisoner out, Sam."
Sam, though he was slightly hesitant, walked into the other room. When he came back out, he held Corey in his arm, who was struggling against the angel until he spotted Colby and then me a few feet ahead.
"Wonderful. Throw him over there and grab her."
He did just that, throwing Corey at Colby, who caught him, then taking my arm. "You have made a wise choice, Colby, but this does not change a thing. Find a queen or we will take another of your precious soldiers until you do. You're on a deadline."
"Yeah, yeah." Colby didn't even look at me as he turned around, pushing a confused Corey towards the door. The angel guards standing in the way moved only to follow him down the steps whilst Sam took me towards a hallway.
"Asshole!" I screamed after him, but he didn't turn back. My entire body was thriving with adrenaline from the pure anger inside of me. I wanted to rip Colby's throat out, and I wasn't going to stop until one day I did, because what he had done to me had undermined everything I'd ever done for him. I'd been kind to him. I'd felt sympathy for him. I'd fucking given myself up to him in part. Then, just like that, in ten seconds, he had ruined everything and given me up to our biggest enemy. Without even a look back.
Asshole.
