She's a student teacher and he's her mentor for her senior year internship. She's ready to learn and he, to teach. But are they ready for the consequences of blurred lines?
“If you’re about to ask if you should let your relationship with Kendall go – only you can decide that, but I can tell you that women like Kendall don’t come along very often. And that woman did something to you that I loved seeing.”
I smiled. “She definitely makes me happy like I’ve never been before, Mom. But I can’t be selfish, and I feel like that’s what I’d be doing.”
“All I can ask is that you talk to her and not make this decision alone. After all, she’s invested in the two of you as well and deserves to be a part of something that affects her, too.”
“Alright, I’ll talk to her.”
“Good,” Mom said with a smile.
We sat together for a little longer before I stood up to leave.
“I’ll see you Sunday,” Mom said. “Dad’s grilling some steaks, so bring your appetite.”
“I definitely will. You know I can’t turn down the old man’s grilling.”
As I climbed in my car, I was thankful that I had Mom to talk to about everything that was going on. She always had the level head in the family and kept us all grounded.

After pulling into the parking spot by the basketball courts, I headed over to the old wooden bench that overlooked a distant baseball diamond. We used to sit on that bench and talk about the future, and Dan would tell me how he was going to take care of me. And in those moments, it’d felt like nothing was wrong in the world.
But that was no longer the case. My time over the summer had helped me realize that he and I wanted different things in life. He wanted arm candy that would follow his career. And I wanted a partner that saw me as an equal. And that was no longer us.
I’d found that with Kyle.
“Hello there,” Dan said, standing up from the bench when I reached it.
“Hi.” He reached over to me for a hug, and I allowed it.
“Thank you for meeting with me, Kendall. I appreciate you doing this.”
“I’m only here so I can understand more of what happened with Molly. And the moment you try to talk about us, I’m leaving.”
He nodded. “I understand. And I know that I fucked up with us, and I can’t change that.”
His smile seemed sincere, but I had a guard up with him that was remaining permanent.
