Mia Adams

Dylan Gomez
"I'm about to order some pizza mom!" I yell from the hallway.
"Alright Mia!" grandma responded.
I had just moved from Oklahoma to California. I was wandering around the house that we would now live in with my grandmother. I had been here before many times, to visit grandma of course, but the difference was that this time, I wouldn't be going back to Oklahoma.
My mom and dad had passed away not too long ago, and an incident that took place that would haunt me forever. I had no other relatives on either side of the family, so I was taken under care by my grandma, Joan. She had recently been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, but she was just as active as ever and she made sure to have full guardianship of me, and I couldn't be more grateful. I dreaded the thought of being sent to an orphanage or living in foster care.
I had been wandering around the small, antique looking house for quite some time now. Just then my stomach grumbled, reminding me that I hadn't eaten in the last six hours.
I began to dial the pizza delivery number.
"Hi. Could I get one large cheese pizza? Yes, a coke will be fine. Thank you".
Yes, I ordered a large pizza for myself. A girls gotta eat.
I hung up the phone and let out a breath of air I had been holding I'm. Even on the phone, talking to people always made me nervous. I decided to start unpacking my boxes. Just as I opened the first box, I heard gramdma call my name.
"Mia! Come down here!".
"Coming!"
Once I enetred the hallway, grandma motioned me to come do the door.
"This is my granddaughter Mia."
I look behind her to see a woman with curly blonde shoulder length hair and blue eyes.
"Mia, this is Mrs. Gomez from next door."
"Hello Mrs. Gomez. It's nice to meet you." I say with a smile.
"Oh please dear. Call me Susan. It's nice to finally meet you too. Joan has been talking about you all week. I have a feeling we will get along well". She handed me a basket full of chocolate muffins. We already know who's gonna be eating all of those.
Grandma invited Susan inside. We sat on the antique furniture and the two ladies began to chat. I sat there, trying to look interested in the conversation, but was getting quite bored, and nervous because like I said, social interaction makes me nervous.
"Mia, are you a senior in high school?" Susan questioned, making me jerk up.
"Yes, I am." I replied. Just then, there was a knock at the door.
"That must be my son. I told him to come around here earlier".
"I'll get that." I said, getting up.
I walked up to the front door and look up to come face to face with the most handsome boy I had ever seen. He had blue eyes and dark brown hair. His biceps and abs were visible through his white shirt, and he looked to be 6"1, so he was pretty tall as compared to 5"1 me. I found myself staring like an idiot.
"Damn" I thought to myself.
After a few seconds of silence, the boy spoke up.
"Hi. I'm Dylan from next door. My mom is in here." he said with an amused smirk, as if enjoying that I had been checking him out.
"H-hi. I'm Mia, from this house."
I mentally slap myself. Why did I say that?
Dylan gave me a confused look. He must've been thinking I'm an idiot. Then I remembered that I looked absolutely horrible. After arriving from the airport, I hadn't gotten the chance to shower so I was still in my grey sweatpants and sweartshirt, and my brown hair was tied into a messy bun. Standing next to Dylan, I was definitely starting to feel a bit insecure.
"Should we go inside?" Dylan said, breaking me out of my thoughts.
"Y-yes. Let's go."
Why was I stuttering?
Dylan follows me to the living room. "There you are Dylan!" Susan said.
Dylan took a seat next to her. Grandma seemed to be pretty fond of him, and Susan began to brag about how he had great grades and how he was all that and grandma would agree with her. Dylan couldn't seem to care less about the fact that they were talking about him like he was some Greek god. He kept his blue eyes glued to his phone with his fingers typing vigorously.
Seriously though, parents who brag too much about their kids annoy me.
I remained quiet most of the time, just nodding and giving short answers to questions Susan and grandma would ask here and there. Dylan was typing the whole time and it was beginning to seem a bit rude, but I didn't mind because this way I didnt have to make eye contact with him. He made stutter which annoyed me.
The pizza arrived shortly after, and Susan said she was on a diet, so she wouldn't be eating any. Grandma wouldn't be eating any rither as the doctor had made her a very strict diet rountine. Dylan however, suddenly put his phone down and sat upright with his hands folded over each other, as if preparing to eat. Call me rude, but I'm willing to share anything except for my food. When I gave grandma a pleading look to get Dylan away from my food, she glared at me, and I couldn't argue any further. I live my grandma, but her fake scares me. Dylan noticed this and smirked, and decided to make me angrier by eating more than his share. After we ate, Dylan grabbed his phone once again.
Susan then said "Dylan, Mia here is also a senior in high school. Me and Joan think I would be a great idea if you could show her around school tomorrow."
Oh snap. I had forgotten. Tomorrow was the first day of school at Westwood High. I was not looking forward to going to school. As you might have already guessed, i'm a very awkward person. When someone talks to me, my awkwardness is a turn off for them and they don't bother talking to me again. As you can guess, I didn't have many friends back in Oklahoma. Zero to be exact.
"Yeah sure. Whatever." Dylan replied, still scrolling though his phone, with his eyes glued to the screen. I raised an eye brow. "His attitude is such a turn off" I think to myself.
"What?" Dylan asked.
My eyes widened in horror as I realised that I hadn't said that sentence in my head. I had said that out loud!
I look around me to see that grandma and Susan were indulged in their conversation, and they thankfully didn't hear me. I look to Dylan and see him still staring at me with his pretty blue eyes, waiting for an answer.
Well this was awkward.
"I- um, I didn't say anything. Y-you must've heard something from your phone or something." I reply.
"Nope. I'm pretty sure you just said that my attitude is a turn off. Besides, you're blushing." he says with a smirk and eyes full of amusement.
Shiz! Stupid dilating blood vessels.
I notice that grandma and Susan are now staring at me and Dylan. Dylan notices this, and seeing as he doesn't question me further, he decides to drop the conversation.
I stare down at my bare feet while Dylan goes back on his phone.
"I really need to cut my toenails." I think to myself this time, and thankfully don't say out loud.
After Dylan and Susan leave, I go up to my room to unpack my things. My room was the largest in the house, and grandma had insisted I take it. It was painted a light blue shade with a medium sized window to one side. My double sized bed with a grey blanket and black bedsheet and pillows stood against one side of the wall with a vanity on the opposite wall, which I knew I would hardly ever use. A round white carpet also took up most of the floor. I was really happy with grandmas efforts to make me feel comfortable as possible. Halfway in between hanging my clothes in my closet, a picture caught my eye. I held the picture of me, mom and dad together, looking as happy as we ever were. For the first time that day, I let myself cry. I had to be strong for grandma, but there's only so much that I could hold in. I missed them so much.

Hey guys! I hope you are enjoying the book so far. I'm sorry about the chapter being so short. I promise they'll get longer. If you are enjoying go ahead and tap the star at the bottom of the page. I would really appreciate it. Also, I'll try to update chapters once a week. I would love to do more frequent updates but I'm a highschool student and it's hard to balance things sometimes. Thank you for giving this a read.
Lots of love-
Erika :)
