It was Friday night and, as usual, you and the boys had gathered in the back corner of the same hole-in-the-wall bar you always went to.  The lights in this section were dim and tinted red, casting shadows and a rosy hue across your skin. Santiago listened to your laugh as you talked to Ben. His gaze, however, was drawn from you when Will lightly snapped his fingers in front of Santiago's face. "Hate to interrupt your ogling there, Pope, but why don't you just talk to her?"
He shook his head, taking a swig of the beer in his hand. "We're just friends, man."
"Maybe," Will allows, "But you obviously want more than that."
     "I don't know what you're-"
"Oh come on, Pope," Will interrupted. "You've been drooling over her since you met her. Just go over there and ask her out. Since when does Santiago Garcia need help with women?"
"I don't need help with women," He replied defensively, "But she's different. I'm not just trying to hook up with her, alright? She deserves more than that."
"Then ask her out. You know, a girl like that isn't going to be single forever."
Your hands settled lightly on Santiago's shoulders as you stood behind his chair. "What are you women gossiping about over here?"
"I was just telling Pope that every opportunity has a shelf life," Will responds simply.
"What this time?" You ask. "Another op or something?"
"No, princesa, nothing like that. Don't worry about it." Santiago's hand moved to rest over yours on his right shoulder. "What about you? What've you been doing all night?"
"Not much," You hum. "Some very light drinking, mostly just talking to Benny. Blondie over there at the bar tried to get my number though," You added with a slight laugh.
     He scoffed, "Seriously?"
"Yeah, he's not really my type though," You drawl.
"And what exactly is your type?" Pope asked, looking up at you over his shoulder.
"That's beside the point. Anyway, I think I'm gonna head out. It's been a long day and I'm dying to get home." You lightly squeezed his shoulders, leaning down and pressing your lips lightly to his cheek. "Goodnight, Santiago." After giving brief goodbyes to the others, you exited through the front doors of the bar.
Pope sunk in his seat the moment you were out of his line of vision, running his hand over his face. Peeking at Will from between his fingers, he mumbled, "Don't. Say. A word."
"Alright, then I will," Ben chimed from the other end of the table. "She's into you, Pope. Just grow a pair and ask her out."
"There are too many friendships that could be damaged if I-"
Tom cut him off. "Oh, come on, man. The fuck is this, junior high? You're both grown-ass adults, Santiago. The two of you can handle it. Stop making excuses, ask her out."
"Twenty bucks says he won't do it within the next week," Ben challenges casually.
     "Seriously, Benny? Betting?" Santiago sighed.
They ignored him. "I'll put in twenty, too," Tom added. "If losing twenty bucks is what I have to do to get this shithead to quit pining over her, then that's a small loss because it's starting to get annoying."
Frankie laughed slightly but nodded. "Alright, I'm in."
"Twenty bucks it is," Will shrugged.
Ben nods, "So if Pope asks her out within the next seven days, we all owe him twenty dollars. If he doesn't, he owes each of us twenty."
"Yeah, I get it. Now talk about something else or I'm leaving," Pope said exasperatedly.
The conversation was effectively ended, but not before Ben could mutter, "Chickenshit."
