While the rest of the class was learning trigonometry, Alex was having a conversation with Chaos. "You know," Alex thought, "this is the only universe I've been to where they have... math."

Chaos was an all-seeing blanket of time and space, but he could hear her chuckling. He could see her smile, infinitely broad and bright. It most certainly isn't. This is the only universe, however, where it is custom that you sit through it. I know you, Alexander, and given the choice, you would much rather swim through the sky with the cloud minnows or dive off the cliffs of memory then perform mathematics.

She was right. "Give me a break. If you had a human form, you would feel the same way. God, this is boring, can I hop out?" Alex parted his arms through the air as if he was practicing breaststroke, and a small, glowing rip the size of a nickel grew in front of him. He audibly gasped when it was wrenched shut, almost falling out of his seat.

Mr. Davies turned away from the equations on the board, his beady, over-caffeinated eyes staring directly into Alex's. "Mr. Vasquez, I see you were just so ready to come up here and answer the next problem."

Alex grimaced. "Uh, no. I'm alright, thanks." Mr. Davies looked around for any other hands in the air, and Alex exhaled in relief, massaging his temples.

A nasally voice trilled from the back of the room as soon as he put his head down on the desk. "Alice..." Some of the class laughed, and Alex's cheeks burned. That wasn't even his real dead name, he thought, rolling his eyes.

"Greene, that'll be enough from you, unless you'd like to come up and answer number fifteen."

Greene. What a stupid, shitty name. What did Alex expect from someone named Greene? It was the epitome of quirky white boy names, a mom who so desperately wanted to sound unique and trendy that she named her baby something that would guarantee he would be the villain in a bad teen movie. Alex stood up, walking out the door, his patience cut short by the stupid teasing. He saw Mr. Davies open his mouth to protest, so he waved him off, simply saying, "Bathroom."

True to his word, he closed the stall behind him and thought as loudly and angrily as possible. "What was that for? You've never turned me down when I want to hop."

Chaos sighed into her ever-expanding void, and Alex felt her breath on the back of his neck, albeit underneath his skin. You've become careless, that is all. Your gift is not a toy, Alexander, and you cannot, under any circumstance use an interdimensional gateway in the middle of class! It is careless. So careless, Alexander.

Alex even sighed louder into the ever-odious void that was the second floor boy's bathroom. "It's not hurting anyone. Besides, none of those idiots in Mr. Davies' class would care if I just disappeared. 'Oh, the freak is gone, next.'"

When Chaos shook her head, Alex felt every fiber of his being ripple. You are my beautiful, excellent boy, Alexander. It hurts me deeply to hear you admonish yourself so casually. I cannot feel pain, of course, so it doesn't actually hurt. You understand.

He folded his arms. "Fine, fine, I'll stop if it upsets you so much. But those kids, they don't see me the same way you do. I'm no more special to them than like, a Michael's forty-percent-off sale. And they have those all the time. I'm going to go, and it's going to be that one place that's just plants, stars, and moss, so don't try to stop me." Chaos had to know that was the place he went when he was upset, stressed, or just burnt out. Dimension jumping had given him quite a short attention span. He parted his arms, and this time, she didn't try to stop him.

Chaos spoke softly. Your recklessness will be the end of you, Alexander. You will find that your actions have consequences; that is the one constant in every universe.

Alex shoved his hands in his pockets, stepping through the portal. "Thanks for your concern, ma'am, but I'm fine. I know the rules."

She started, "Not a girl--" but he was long since bathing in the light of the cosmos.

author's notes:

thank you for reading chapter one! i have a lot written by hand already, so expect frequent updates. idk what the like/favorite is, so do whatever one of those is relevant if you enjoyed it! about chaos, this isn't important but i would like to share. chaos doesn't have a gender, because chaos is more of a force than a god or something, but alex uses female pronouns to personify her. despite chaos being a "girl," i picture her voice sounding like the guy from welcome to night vale, cecil palmer, lol. 2014 tumblr is shaking. the next chapters will definitely be longer!
