The House of Windsor is the reigning royal house of the United Kingdom and other countries in the Commonwealth. As of 1901, the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha succeeded the House of Hanover to the British monarchy with the crowning of King Edward VII, the son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. In 1917, the name of the royal house was changed from the German Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the English Windsor (from Windsor Castle) because of anti-German sentiment in the United Kingdom during World War I.
Prince Alexander is the seventh child of King George V and Mary of Teck, as well as the twin brother of Prince John, both born in 1905 and both with epilepsy, John's more severe than Alexander's. In 1919, just after the war, Prince John died after a severe seizure, making Alexander fifth in line to the throne after his brother, George. He now attends the University of Cambridge as of 1923.
