"She went to help a friend. Her last daughter is celebrating her wedding on Saturday."
"Are her bodyguards with her?" Demilade asked.
"Of course. They are always with her." His mother answered.
"Better. So how are you mom? Is your business going smoothly?"
"It's going well. I'm even expecting a shipment by 4 pm on Saturday. But the ladies are handling the shop while I am away."
"Okay." He said.
There was a comfortable silence between mother and son for a while before his mother broke the silence.
"I talked with Lola today." He looks at her. "She is a nice lady. She even treated Gbenga and Ebuka well. She talks with them freely and serves them food. I like the girl so much. She is so simple and blunt. She does not see herself to be so big. She even tell me how you met."
Demilade stiffens beside his mother. He doesn't know what Lola has told his mother. The last time she didn't go along with what they discussed. So he is not sure what she would do this time.
"She told me her dad works in your company and that's where you met." She told him.
He breathed out in relief after she said it.
"Yes, we met at the company." He lied in agreement.
He knows Lola had half lied to his mother and he was grateful for it. She didn't turn on him. But then again she can't. What will his mother think of her? And will she tell her that she makes a deal with a man that she didn't know just because she was desperate for money? She can't possibly say that.
Nevertheless, he still owes her.
"But what happened between you and Lola?" She asked.
"What do you mean mom?" Demilade asked pretending to be oblivious to what his mother said.
"Don't play dumb with me Demilade. What did you do to offend Lola?"
"Mom. You didn't even ask if I am the one who is wronged. How would you know I am the one who wrong her?" He asked.
"I know. Because I saw how she reacted when you came in. And if she was in the wrong, she wouldn't do that, instead, she would have me plead on her behalf."
"I just said something to her two days ago. And she had been angry since then. " He said truthfully
"Did you apologize for what you said? Because I know she must have been hurt for her to act that way."
"Mom you are siding with her." Demilade sounded unbelievable. He doesn't know why his mother is on the lady's side.
"Of course, I will. I won't side with you if you are doing something wrong. So you should go and apologise to her." She said in a warning tone to him.
He nodded. "I will." He said flatly.
"I mean it Demilade. You should apologize to her. You need to swallow that pride of yours. It will do no good to you or your relationship."
"I've heard you mom. I will apologise to her." He said more seriously.
"Better." She said stiffly. And she stood up. "I'm going to bed."
"So fast?" He was surprised.
"Yes, my dear." She said rubbing his cheek. "Goodnight." And she walks away to the guest room she usually stayed in whenever she is around.
She preferred the room downstairs because she won't have to climb the stairs.
He heaved a sigh when she was out of sight. He can never understand women. They were so complicated to deal with.
