"Plate, boy! Remember the rules, your family owe us!" Mrs Lindsay, the mother of the family Elijah was serving, snapped her fingers impatiently.

Politely, the boy nodded, fluffy black hair following as he bowed to his employer. The word left a sour taste in his mouth, making him want to roll his eyes. He didn't, of course, just being a teenager, seventeen,  working to pay off his family's debt to this horrible woman.

He shook his head of the thoughts, turning on the hot water tap.

-

"Elijah! Could you help me?" The sweet voice echoed through the halls, followed by said male's feet hitting the floorboards as he rushed to Katie's room.

"What would you- my, I'm sorry but that's the wrong colour for you, who chose that?" Elijah stared, appaled at the shade of the garment.

"I didn't know which to pick, that's why I need help, please!" The girl laughed, pushing her luscious locks out of her round face. Elijah smiled, hiding his envy toward his female friend that could go the the ball.

"Alright! Let's see what you've got..." Elijah looked through the clothes inside the wardrobe. "Perfect! Here you are!"

"You're a lifesaver, I swear! I didn't think of this one, but now that you mention, it's perfect!" Katie looked up with a grin as she took the yellow dress, bubblegum pink hair framing her expression. "Mind if I call you in here again for hair?"

"It's perfectly fine, Kate! I'm just going to check on your sister's outfit, make sure it's not obviously awful." He winked at the girl, a playful smile on his lips as he walked away.

"Just subtly gross!"

Well, time to get ready for Penelope.

"Excuse me, Miss? May I assist with your outfit?" Elijah knocked on Penelope's door.

"No! A guy wouldn't know anyways!" The voice coming from the other side of the door was definitely irritated. At least he didn't deal with it.

"I apologize, Miss."

-

Hayden sighed down at the empty ballroom, his blonde hair perfectly styled and mask covering the top portion of his face. How was he supposed to choose a wife? How, with his sexuality, even! Then again, being closeted at eighteen wasn't the best decision when it came down to it; if he wanted to be petty about it.

"Well, I guess there might be a cute guy." He laughed quietly, doubting it.

-

"Listen, boy, don't touch anything while we're gone"

"Yes, Mrs Lindsay. You already know you don't need to worry about me." Elijah was bent into a bow, and finally the woman left, leaving him in the house alone when, all of a sudden, he had an idea.

Elijah rushed upstairs, finding the suit he had been given for formalwear, the outfit barely fitting him. The shoes ended up being too small. He reached for his usual battered up pair, tying the laces and hurrying towards Katie's room. She wouldn't mind him using her makeup, right? It's only a little anyways. He ended writing an apology letter.

He eyed himself in the mirror, having applied just some concealer, lip tint and eyeliner. There was a spare mask in the room too, and before he thought much, he took it.

Apart from his shoes, he'd fit in. He looked at the clock on the wall, half nine.

He must be back by midnight.

-

Elijah looked in awe at the high ceiling of the hall, littered with expensive chandeliers.

Eventually, he got the drift and began dancing with people. Every few minutes, they would switch partners, and he cycled through a few girls before he unexpectedly ended up with a male.

Said male was shorter than Elijah, but was so pretty. His blonde hair framed his face perfectly, and the calico cat mask he wore was incredible. Moving down to his small nose, Elijah wished to kiss it. Either that or his plump, pink lips, smiling softly.

He didn't notice the male's identity until probably quite late, letting out a gasp. He was dancing with Prince Hayden!

"My god, how handsome you are. How did you get a jawline so sharp?" The prince dragged his finger along his jawline, Elijah's cheeks growing bright as he averted his eyes.

"I- I don't really know, why is someone as beautiful as you questioning me about appearance, Prince?" His throat felt oddly dry, wanting to hold the prince closer yet push him away.

"I think you deserve to know you're handsome, Sir." Elijah felt warmth against his cheek, and his eyes widened before the prince slipped out of his arms and a giggly girl replaced him.

After what felt like an eternity, he finally escaped the dancing, beelining toward the food. Elijah picked up an expensive plate, placing a few sausage rolls and a small slice of cake onto it before retreating to a corner.

He stayed there for a while, eyeing the clock and knowing he'd need to leave soon but not having the guts once he saw the prince heading towards him.

"Hello again, handsome. What do you say we have a talk?" Prince Hayden smiled - flirtatiously? - at him.

"I sincerely apologise, but I need to be home soon. I'm sorry, Prince." Elijah scratched the back of his head.

"I'm sure you have a couple minutes, right?" The prince stared up at him, eyes wide in question. Elijah coughed, giving in to the prince's will after only the slightest hesitance.

"Fine, sure. What would you like to talk about?" Elijah gave a small smile.

"How-" The prince walked closer, placing a finger on his chest "-it's awfully unfair I need to choose a wife, when there's such a handsome male in front of me."

Elijah's breath caught in his throat, looking down into Prince Hayden's eyes with shock. "Yeah, I really need to rush home now. I'm sorry, again, Prince." He slipped away, running.

He looked back, causing him to get his foot stuck in something, letting out a curse. He untied his shoe, leaving it there as it was going to stop him.

-

Two days had passed without much event. Of course, except from the fact that the prince himself was going around with Elijah's shoe.

"Why did I leave it there, I'm such an idiot!" Elijah rubbed his forehead, annoyed with himself.

Ding.

The doorbell rang loud and clear, and Elijah jumped. Mrs Lindsay called up impatiently for him to get the door, so he ran towards it.

He opened it, to be met with a head of blonde hair and an angelic face. The prince, also holding his beat-up shoe.

"Erm, hello?" Elijah grimaced; Prince Hayden smirked.

"Hello, then. Would you please try this shoe on? And get your other one?" Elijah nodded, rushing to his room and returning with his right shoe.

"Thanks for bringing it back. I hope you're not gonna pull a King Henry." Elijah laughed awkwardly.

"Yes I am. Where's Mrs Lindsay?" Hayden glanced inside when Elijah turned around.

"Mrs Lindsay? The prince wants to see you." He called, and she was summoned.

"I would like you to witness a proposal."

"Wait, a proposal? Prince, I'm not complaining, but shouldn't you have a bride? I'm not a girl..." Elijah's weak protests were shut down immediately.

"If the shoe fits, Sir."
