Sonny knew a lot about the circle of life — they taught that when you were a foster kid, growing up in the system. It was never a secret, never hidden. They told her that her mother wasn't coming back, she was gone, and whereas all the other kids had cried over their lost families, Sonny figured it made sense. It was there and then she realised they all died. Death was inescapable. It was inevitable.
So, no. Death was never a stranger to Sonny Penbrook. But regardless, Sonny never thought that her first time witnessing it would take her by such surprise, that it would paralyse her, that she would stop breathing.
