Veronica's POV
As the light of the sun landed on my face, I let out a very audible groan. The dreaded "first day" has finally come, glancing at my LED clock it becomes apparent that I slept waaayy too long. Shooting out of bed, I damn near trip over my feet as I shoved them in my house shoes while shuffling to the bathroom.
As I looked into the mirror,it felt like time slowed for just a second. Y'all know the feeling when you just wake up, and your hearing, scent, and sight gotta load back up?
Yeah well while looking into the mirror everything sounded like it came to a complete halt. Although my eyes were still pink from my sudden awakening, the overhead light of the bathroom made them look like bowls of honey as the hazel and brown were illuminated. I've always seemed to have a love-hate relationship with my own eyes. Growing up, kids always had SOMETHING to say about the brown skin girl with light brown eyes, I didn't understand why until I got into high school.
Nevertheless, thank god for thick skin, even though that didn't come very easily either. I snapped out of my trance and began brushing my teeth vigorously with one of my hands while simultaneously rubbing the cold out the corners of my eyes with the other.
After gargling my mouth out and almost drowning myself with listerine, I shuffle back into my room and begin my raid of my own closet, which was still mostly boxed up.
I started to feel like I was living one of those episode stories centered around the new girl; What style would I want to go with to make a good first impression?
Should I put on my pink ugg slides, ripped jeans, and white graphic tee to go for a perky style or should I put on my black ankle boots, some black jeans and my jean jacket over my "You Matter" hoodie for a more laid back look?
Nah...I find some nike sweatpants I was gifted with and my Nike tee and chose to go comfort over style for my first day. I guess my player didn't have enough gems. As I finished pulling up my pants and putting on my shoes, I noticed a familiar scent wafting through the air; bacon and pancakes.
A smile instinctively comes across my face, but then drops as I realize I forgot the mess of curls that is my hair. I go back into the bathroom and get to work with my ecostyler gel and water. It took me all of 15 minutes to slick my hair into a low bun, and add some "swoops" to my edges.
I can't be the only one who calls them "swoops"....right?
Anyways, as I left my room holding my black backpack on my shoulder I could already hear my brothers wrecking havoc in their room adjacent to mine. I let out a sigh, and continued to the kitchen.
My eyes were met with a plate consisting of one pancake and 2 short pieces of bacon.
"Ma, what happened to all the food?"
I asked with genuine confusion. My mom, who was sitting on the couch sipping what I could guess to be a mug of coffee with a little something extra poured in, turned her head to look at me.
"You know damn well it's first come first serve, and them boys can eat they weight in pancakes; you should be glad they saved you that one. Hurry up and eat it cause my show's 'bout to come on and you gone get to that damn school."
I watched her get up and slide on her house shoes and pick up her keys. So much for a family breakfast. I folded my bacon into my pancake, taco style, and took a couple of big bites.
Thankfully she left me a glass of juice cause I almost died trying to swallow.
Getting into the car, for some reason my heart started to beat faster and I felt myself starting to become anxious.
It's not like I haven't been the "new girl" before but this time is just...different. I just have this feeling that there won't be many dull moments at this new school.
