Today was the day of the tests we call the Day of Judgement. A test has been set in place for the past twenty years for the young adults of our humble town of Greendale. For the first time taking these tests, I was nervous.
"This is the last one, Maggie." My friend Hayley whispered to me as we sat in the decorated auditorium.
"Yeah." I smirked, hiding my ounce of fear. "You have something to tell me?"
She let out a silent laugh.
"If anyone should be asking that, it should be me. I mean, you won't let me over to your house, you barely hang out with me after school, and you refuse to have sleepovers at my house."
I let out a whispery laugh and tried to sit comfortably in my seat. It was true that my father had never allowed any friends over due to some unconscious fear he never felt the need to tell me. But I never really cared, because I never really had any friends. Hayley was simply one of the few people I had cared to interact with during my time at school.
Mr. Frank, our principal, walked into the auditorium with his big bulky clipboard in hand. Looking down at it, he scanned the long list of names in search for his next victim.
"Hayley Ripley, you're up. Ms. Rogers you are next." He glared up from the clipboard as I let Hayley pass.
Mr Frank and I were well acquainted with one another. I would grace him with my presence, if only for disciplinary reasons, but I managed to get out of it every time with the help of my father. I was known for getting into fights, and I was even more famous for getting myself out of them. It was a rare occurrence for me to be the so called "aggressor" in situations like that. Secretly, I knew Mr. Frank was waiting for the day where I either left, or he was able to get rid of me in some way, legally or otherwise.
I shivered away the thought of being potentially murdered by Mr. Frank. I was nervous enough as it is for some reason. Now isn't the time for my charming wit and confidence to leave me now.
Just as usual, Hayley's test took under 10 minutes. It was a local legend here in Greendale that if it took any longer than an hour to get your test back that the kid getting tested was a highly dangerous monster. Not like anything like that has ever happened here. For a total of 12 years I have been getting tested. It was a law that every child had to start their testing at four years old since that was the earliest it could be detected in a child. By sixteen if you still hadn't tested positive then the chances of someone getting it was little to none.
I jumped as a hand on my shoulder broke me out of my trance.
"Magdalene, when I call you, you are supposed to come and exit the auditorium." Said the shiny bald head of Mr Frank, as he crossed his arms over his chest, clipboard still in hand.
I shook off the hand.
"My dearest apologies, Frank. I'll be right over." I picked up my backpack and followed him out of the mostly empty auditorium.
Outside in the hallway was where the men and women from the hospital chose to set up their equipment this year. Following procedure, I sat in the large dentist-like chair and set my arm up on the armrest facing upwards. They stuck a needle in my vein ceremoniously and I watched as blood flooded the tube thing sucking it up. I cringed, looking away. After all this time that I've been tested and I still can't handle the sight of blood. They put the tube of blood into the mysterious machinery.
Silently we sat there for five minutes waiting for the process to finish. The practitioners looked at me skeptically and I nodded towards them awkwardly. It was a couple more minutes until I realized that something had to be wrong with that damned machine.
