Sydney lays in bed, listening. She hears nothing except the soft chirping of crickets outside of her cracked window in the corner of her room. She starts to drift off to sleep when she hears a noise in the lower level of her home. She lifts herself from her bed to listen for the noise.
She hears the soft clicking of footsteps on tile. It's very faint but just loud enough for her to hear. It seems like someone was in her kitchen. She then hears a floorboard creaking at the bottom for her staircase. How did they move that fast? She thought. She hears the footsteps go up the stairs so slowly she can hear every creak and groan of the stairs.
The stairs stopped its slow creaking and groaning.
Sydney suddenly hears a new noise coming from the stairs. This time a whisper. A whisper so quiet she can hear every sound each letter makes in the soft yet harsh voice.
"Are you alone in this house?" The whisper says.
Although she knew the voice was coming from the staircase, but it sounded like the whisper was being said right into her ear. She was confused but she didn't know why, her head was so cloudy. She also knew that she shouldn't say that she was, in fact, alone in her house.
"I am not alone." she breathed under her breath. She somehow was able to get her mind through the thick fog it was in and tell the lie.
A few seconds went by when she hears the creaking and groaning of the stairs again. Unlike last time, when the creaks and groans were slow, these ones started to pick up pace after each and every step.
Creak. Groan. Creak, and goan. Creak and groan.
Sydney's head became foggier than before.
The creaking and the groaning were loud. But not as loud as the whispers that joined the creakings and groans.
The whispers didn't make any words that Sydney could understand. They were just a jumble of words being said in soft, sweet, and peaceful voices. But the volume of the whispers increased just as the speed of the steps increased. As the volume increased the soft, sweet, and peaceful whispers became raspy, harsh, and crys of war. They also became clearer and clearer.
Once Sydney knew what they were saying she fell off her bed and onto the floor. The steps became faster. The whispers became louder.
Sydney slaps her hands over her ears and tries to block out the sounds, but as she does, they become louder and louder. Until finally, a new noise drowns them all out. Whatever was running up the stairs so fast, they were now running through her upstairs hall and at her bedroom door. The whispers continued to screech and yell at her. Sydney started to cry because of what they were saying.
"It's not true!" She yelled. "IT'S NOT TRUE! I'M INNOCENT!"
The whispers laughed at her from wherever they were. Then all at once they yelled, "LIAR!"
The footsteps pounded in the hall. The whispers laughed and called Sydney names.
THUD.
Everything stopped. The footsteps. The whispers. Everything stopped when whatever was running toward Sydney's door smashed itself against it.
Sydney could now hear herself sobing, and could hear nothing else. Her sobs drowned out all sounds from her room.
"Hello, Sydney." A deep voice said behind her.
Sydney spun around and faced whoever was speaking. He was a tall man with light blue eyes and grey metallic skin. He wore a long dark coat and black boots that poke out of the bottom.
Sydney couldn't say a word. She was in such shock.
"How are you Sydney? You know, after you found out that someone knows what you did?" The tall man with glowing blue eyes said.
"W-what d-did i do?" Sydney asked while shaking with fear.
"Ha!" the man laughed. "You know exactly what you did. Would you like me to explain what you have done?" He said in a sinister tone.
Sydney cried harder.
"I'll take that as a yes." He said. "You came into a woman's house and stole her life. You KILLED her and stole her home and family. Must I continue?"
He looked at Sydney who was backing herself up to her door now.
"N-n-no." She stammered.
"REALLY? But there's MORE!" He shouted.
"Y-you don't have t-to continue." Sydney now has pushed herself up against the door all the way now. There was nowhere else to go.
"I'll continue. The woman's husband was suspicious of you and you staged a CAR ACCIDENT to KILL HIM!" He said this in an angry tone and walked towards Sydney with each word. His voice was deep and rumbly. "Is what I'm telling you ture, Sydney?" He said in a quieter and calmer tone.
Sydney opened her mouth but all that could come out was bits and pieces of words. "I-I- d-"
"SHUT UP!!" The man shouted. "I know you did everything I just said because I watched you." He growled.
Sydney had stopped crying when he said that.
"H-h-how?" She stammered.
The tall man looked at her with amusement and something that resembled a smile and said, "I see everything that is anything but innocent, and you, my dear, are not." He laughed before he continued. "I will punish you for what you have done to the woman and her husband and everyone and everything you've ever killed."
"W-why are you doing this to me?" Sydney asked. "I've only killed two people? What about everyone else who has killed?" She was getting a bit irritated now. People have killed things in her and her life and not gotten caught. Why does she?
"Oh I punish everyone who loses their innocents like you have. I know everything about your innocents, I even have it with me," As he said this he reached his hand into his coat pocket and pulled out a bottle of a light blue gas like substance. "This is your innocence, deary." he continued. "You lost it on August 16th about five years ago. Sound about right?" He looked at Sydney with something like remorse.
All sydney could do is try not to cry even more and nod her head in response. She closed her eyes and cried.
The man was next to her now. "Would you like to be with your daughter? "He asked."Yes, more than anything." Sydney sobed.
"Okay." He said, voice now full of sympathy and sorrow. "I will put her in your dreams. Her actual sports. Okay?"
Sydney nodded.
"But you have to do one thing for me." Sydney looked up at him. "Turn yourself into the police. Give them all of the evidence. Then you can have your daughter in your dreams. Can you do that?"
"Yes. I think I can." Sydney felt cold but hot at the same time.
"Ill visit you." The man said as black smoke started to devour him and the last thing Sydney saw was his light blue eyes and heard him say,
"Goodbye sydney. Go to sleep now and see your daughter. Turn yourself in tomorrow morning." And he was gone.
Sydney laid right on the floor and tried to sleep. She wanted to see her daughter so bad. It's been so long.
Eventually, Sydney fell asleep.
Sydney found herself in a white circular marble room with big columns around it. In the middle of the room, stood her daughter in a bright yellow dress that made her red hair stand out.
"Evealine." Sydney whispered.
Her young daughter turned around and gave her mother a big smile. "Hello, mother!"
