A Talk

Max's POV

I had to take the boat back due to the fact that Sky was completely unable to fly. Blackstar was seasick the whole way back, her cheeks had somewhat of a green tint, and I'm not making that up. I felt sorry for my poor girl whenever she'd throw up due to the boats constant rocking, but at the same time I couldn't help but laugh at the irony. This was a dragon who could fly at hypersonic speeds and do crazy things like barrel rolls and tornado spins, yet the sway of a boat made her sick? I felt gulity, but I couldn't help it because it was funny.

Ash had taken the boat back with me and we passed the two day journey with Call Of Duty Ghosts, Borderlands The Pre-Sqeuel, Forza Horizon, random movies and occasionally cleaning up Blackstar's puke (disgusting by the way, too many fish skeletons). Lynx stayed close to Blackstar the whole time, while Ziggy and Lugnut went around causing trouble and then trying to blame Sky, who was almost always asleep, I already knew I'd have to put locks on the food crates I kept at the cove. While Blackstar was well behaved and stayed out of them, those two wouldn't. We made landfall at a dock I'd built that let out from a hidden river that fed the pond in the cove. Blackstar was all too eager to get off the boat and onto the beach. The second we made the dock, she was off the boat and rolling around in the sand. I couldn't help but laugh and snap a few pictures.

Once we got over with the excitement, we walked to the cove with our dragons. Sky, Ziggy and Lugnut seemed impressed with their new home. The first thing Ziggy did was bolt into the pond and Lugnut went after him. Sky had found a patch of tall grass and was already making herself at home.

“They seem happy”, Ash said.

I smiled, “they do, and if they are, I am”, I turned to Blackstar, “can you make sure they stay out of trouble girl? I have things I gotta do.”

Blackstar nudged me and licked my face, I smiled.

“Ok then”, I replied petting her, “I'll be back later and then we can go flying.”

Blackstar purred her approval and then Ash and I left for pizza hut. We ate a large pepperoni at our usual patio table and then he went to granddad's store while I went home. I managed to slip in without anyone noticing. Mom was at work as her cop car was gone and Dad's Ford GT was missing as well. Kelly must have been with Dylan and I assumed that Ryan was down at the ring.

“No one's home”, I said to myself, I turned a corner to find Sammy laying on the counter, “expect you.”

Sammy just looked at me. Dumb cat, sometimes I wondered how the domesticated cat would survive with out man to build them scratching posts and counters to lay on. I walked upstairs and changed out of my Rider gear, showered and then changed into a black shirt and tan shorts.

I passed most of the day playing Midnight Club: Los Angles Complete edition and trying to beat my high score at 3D Pinball: Space Cadet of 3,290,321,892, I never came close. I deep fried a bag of popcorn chicken for dinner and then watched my favorite show, Dual Survival. I was up in my room sketching out ideas for a new rig when I heard Dad walking up the stairs, somehow I hadn't heard the Ford pull in.

“Dad?”, I asked quickly my sketches, “no one else is home....”

I had to say something, cut me some slack I'm nervous as hell!

“I know”, Dad said, “I came looking for you.”

“You...you did?”, I asked closing my notebook.

“You've been keeping secrets”, Dad said lowly.

He knew.

“I have?”, I asked.

“Just how long did you think you could hide it from me?”

I swallowed, I was dead.

“I really have no idea what you...”

“Nothing happens on this island with out my hearing about it”, Dad said, “so, let's talk, about that dragon.”

I felt my heart stop. They'd found Blackstar, most likely they'd killed her, Sky and the others as well. Then Dad started laughing.

“So your not...angry?”, I asked.

“WHAT?”, Dad asked, “I was hoping for this!”

Now I was just confused, “uhh...you were?”

“And believe me”, Dad said smiling, “it only get's better, wait till you fire a Barrett 20 for the first time...or blast a Gronckle point blank with a Remington 870! You really had me going there son, all those years of the worst Hunter Midkiff had ever seen! I'll admit, it was rough and I almost gave up and all the while you were holding out on me! With you doing so well, we finally have something to talk about.”

“You know I hate this Dad”, I said, “but I will admit this much, it was so funny when Dylan mocked the terrible Terror for being small, right before the little guy jumped on his face and chewed on him.”

Dad laughed, “Ryan showed me a video, who knew they were like cats with light”, his laughter quieted, “son, Ryan and I were talking earlier, we wanted you to have this.”

Dad pulled an engraved titanium combat knife out of a brown paper bag. The sheath was made of carbon fiber and had tan drawcord handle. The blade was engraved in an elegant pattern and an inscription read,

“Never give up without a fight, stand for your beliefs, never let another destroy them.”

“Wow,”, I said looking it over, “Dad...thank you.”

“You've earned it”, Dad said, “you've held up your end of the deal.”

I felt somewhat gulity at hearing those words, because I hadn't, not in the way my father wanted.

“I gotta go to bed Dad”, I said, “the Pre-Finals are tomorrow.”

Dad nodded and left my room. I walked over to my bed and fell into it, taking one last look at the knife before placing it on my nightstand and falling asleep.
