Norman Atherton, an InGen chief geneticist who worked many years with John Hammond. Norman got involved with InGen when he cloned a sheep for a project of his when he went to the university. John Hammond witnessed his remarkable job of cloning and offered him a position in InGen as a member of the science division.
Norman took the job as the chief geneticist, years passed of Norman working with InGen, and helped develop a "dwarf elephant", when Hammond showed his investors what InGen was capable of creating and showing several future ideas of InGen's plans.
As the ages started catching up on Norman with thirty years of working with both people, he took it upon himself to find a suitable pupil to take under his wing, teaching them everything Norman knew. From the small cell duplications to the actual cloning of small animals from birds to the larger ones like cows and horses.
Norman stumbled upon Henry Wu when he was just entering Stanford. Watching him and everyone he had in his class, when he went undercover as a teacher at Stanford, hoping to find his pupil soon. When the first semester came around, Norman got to know his students and that's when he saw Henry Wu.
A quiet kid that always sat close to his desk upfront, taking notes, and observing everything Norman taught.
Norman took a liking to the boy when they both had similar likings. Both men helped one another in evaluating each other's reports and giving feedback.
Norman soon took Henry to InGen's lab to do 'hands-on' work with his other scientists. While many of the other scientists, from Stanford, knew of Norman's association with Hammond, they tried to get him fired for being in the school as "undercover"—yet they never were able to since the higher-ups saw Norman as a way to gain more students into the science division.
Henry Wu being a fast learner and the prodigy he was always told back when he was in Ohio, was the best geneticist Norman had in his lab, like a proud father watching their son taking the family business. And it was then that Norman started teaching Henry everything he knew and learned along the way.
Two years have passed, since when Norman took Henry Wu under his wing. With Henry close to his finals to get his graduate in doctorate, Norman knew he didn't have long to teach his best student everything he knew since he recently found out he's been diagnosed with heart cancer.
Henry Wu balanced both his Stanford studies and Norman's teachings with little difficulty, loving the thought of learning something new in both categories. Having the chance of two different but similar roles of science careers to learn and understand were his motivation and that anything was possible with the right mindset.
When Norman would be called up by Hammond to join him for a meeting, he would never stop talking about Henry being the best geneticist in his lab compared to the rest of the scientists or students he worked with. Hammond had a twinkle in his eye when Norman praised Henry Wu's progress in his lab.
Not a week after prior to that meeting, Norman died at the age of fifty-eight from the heart cancer that took him in his sleep.
John Hammond was heartbroken that his best scientist passed before the 'big' plan fell into action.
When Henry got the call, from one of the scientists that worked with Norman, announcing that Norman passed Henry didn't know how to react to the news. Apart of him wanted to break down and die right there and then, but another part of him wanted to fulfill Norman's unfinished dreams.
After all, Norman cared for Henry Wu like a son he never had. And Henry Wu saw Norman as his father. Naturally, Henry Wu was invited to attend the funeral and burial of his dear teacher, friend and father figure of Norman Atherton.
Two weeks after the funeral of Norman Atherton, John Hammond remembered his dear friends last words of Henry Wu's work capability in his lab, giving John a clear recommendation that Henry was the clear candidate to his secret plan.
Henry Wu was no older than twenty-eight year old, and a proud graduate student from getting his doctorate at Stanford, who was soon sought out by John Hammond after a month of Norman Atherton's passing.
