Chapter One

Everyday I repeat the same endless cycle, Eat, school, sleep. Eat, school sleep. Sometimes I forget who I am. Days, weeks, months pass before I realize I am still alive, standing on what we have left of a planet.

My name is Biana Miller and I am 15 years old. I have a slender, Scrawny build with piercing teal eyes that resemble ice. I have wavy chocolate-brown hair that's shines in the sunlight. On the side of my face I have a strange looking mark. When I ask my mom about it, she glances off and just says it's a beauty mark, so I don't give it too much thought.

School is bittersweet. On the bright side, you get to see someone outside your family, but you can't even talk to them, if you do you risk facing service time. I often consider leaving, just walking out of this damn city. No one would care. Everyone here is just as lifeless as I am.

                  ———————————
I wake up with a start. I look to the left to check the time.
5:30am
Walking over to the dresser, I grab the required uniform . A dull, blue tunic and gray leggings or trousers. I walk into the kitchen to grab my "breakfast." It's just a pile of protein and oats.

"Good morning Biana." My mom tells me.

          "Morning." I respond.

I ponder if I'm even real stef to my mom. She has brown eyes and a muscular build with curly blonde hair. She looks tough, but she's a gentle giant.

My dad left when I was young. It was unheard of in our world and by now, I assume he is dead. Part of me hopes that my dad is living a good life far away from this place. The other part, feels pure hatred. Whenever I talk about Dad, my mom gets all fidgety. So I try to avoid the topic.

—————————
I've learned to love the streets over the years. It's busy yet peaceful and I often get lost in thought. I have to walk a fairly long distance to get to school. I would say about two miles. Though I don't complain. Mostly because I can't.

As I arrive at the building I look at the large clock that is on top of the building. It read 6:30am. Right on time.

Dozens of other students pour trough the big doors. I head to my first class; history with Mr. Rivers. Everyday we learn the same thing. "Charles Randall saves the world from sudden doom." I never believed the propaganda they try to feed us. Sadly, others do. As I zone out something catches my eye. There was a new kid. This may be the first, most people are forbidden to move. Something to do with, "trauma," I cannot begin to understand how people actually believe we live in a perfect world, with no pain, suffering, or hatred.I turn to look at him more clearly, only to see him looking at me.

He has deep blues eyes that remind me of the ocean, dark but enticing. He has tousled jet black hair and looks to be about 5 Foot 8. Before Mr. Rivers can catch me staring, I quickly look away and go back to "paying attention."

                    —————————
As the bell rings, I walk out the door and stroll into my next class. Now, the usually empty desk next to me had been filled by the new boy I saw earlier. Ms. Wilkom was sitting at her desk waiting for the rest of the students to arrive when new boy broke a law. He passed me a note. I should've went and thrown it away right then and there but my curiosity got the best of me.

When I opened the note it read, "Don't say a word to anyone, not even your mom. The world is in danger, and we few runners are it's only hope. Meet me behind this building after school ends, I will explain everything.
-Zeph"

I try to comprehend what I just read. I knew I had to meet him. I don't know why but I feel like I should trust him I mean, the world being in danger sounded like a pretty big deal, and maybe he could get me out of here.

The rest of the day was slow. I couldn't stop thinking about the note, and I can't wait for the bell to ring. I was unsure of what I was about to do but I knew one thing:

I wanted answers.
