"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
― J.R.R. Tolkien

Regret and love are two powerful emotions that are often intertwined. Annabelle knew that at this moment she had made so many choices in love to regret.

She regretted wasting time with her parents, not spending extra days with them when she could, she regretted not telling the truth about her own feelings and not letting those around her know she was suffering and that she needed their very love in so many dark times. She knew that now if she could she would go back and forgive herself for the mistakes she made and move forward with hope and optimism. She knew though that while her regret lingered her love would hopefully endure.

She didn't know how long she had been in this place of dark dark isolation. But she knew that she had an important choice to make. It was figuring out what it was that was proving difficult.

And just as she couldn't bear it anymore, the unknowingness of her existence, the image of Dr Williams rushing to her side as she lay lifeless on the bed flashed in her mind, Gilbert flew back and the palpitations began, it flashed forward to her in her bed breathing steadily, Gilbert sitting outside of the house head in hands smiling in what seemed to be a relief.

Then the image of her running forward to Gilbert, yet she looked older her hair longer and face brighter as they embraced into a hug, he touched her cheek and just as they were about to kiss the scene moved away to them in college smiling brightly as they studied together, then their wedding her dress white with light blue ribbons just as she had always imagined. Gilbert running away from her while laughing as she chased him in her favourite field of daises. She saw herself hugging him goodbye as he went away. Time changed and the weather shifted but then she saw him coming back waving a certificate. Finally, she closed her eyes refusing to watch anymore. She hadn't even realized she was crying until her hot tears trickled down her neck.

The scene seemingly began again but this time the ringing sound of Gilbert's cries of agony flooded so loudly in her ears she slammed her hands over her ears to block it out, the same scene appeared but now no doctor appeared. She remained still and lifeless, her aunt rushing in screaming in agony.

Then her funeral, Gilbert was alone in tears. Images of him not attending the college exam, Anne appearing next to him. Annabelle sees how he feels she can't understand why but it is as if she experiences his loss, he feels lost and alone, like a part of him has been ripped away, leaving him with an emptiness that nothing can fill. The world around him seemed dull and colourless. He tries to distract himself, to keep busy with work and hobbies, but the pain always finds its way back to him, reminding him of all that he's lost. He wonders how he'll ever move on, how he'll ever find happiness again. But even in his grief, he knows that he was blessed to have had her in his life. He cherishes the memories they made together, and he knows that she'll always be a part of him, a part of his heart and soul. Annabelle's eyes well with tears, until it once again fast-forwards but this time a wedding? only not hers now it was Gilbert dressed in a black suit, hair done so perfectly, his face smiling yet his eyes reflecting the image of the bride as... Anne. Gilbert attending a prestigious college. Anne becoming a professor and finally the scene of Gilbert's statue being put up in front of a hospital.

Then darkness. Were these her two options? To choose a future? Gilbert's career had meant so much to him, and how she wanted him to get the recognition he deserved.  But she couldn't help feel so much grief that she would never see the love of her life again.
