At least one hundred zombies are flooding in to the band room. I see Amber, Brooke and Macy on the roof of the school. They look at the car and wave. They’re terrified and I’m trapped. Zombies have surrounded the car and the glass is starting to break. I growl and jump in to the back seat. Tatum looks at me as I flip the back seats down and rifle through the duffel bags trying to find a gun that I can use to get us out of here. If we stay here, we’ll die.

“Dammit!” I shout as a zombie breaks through the window closest to me.

I grab a baseball bat from the nearest duffel bag and break the zombie’s arm off. It doesn’t slow him down much through. He starts to crawl through the window and I scramble back and continue my search. He’s half way in the car and reaching for my ankle when I find the hand gun bag. I grab a box of ammunition from one of the open duffel bags and quickly load the gun. The zombie is just about to bite my ankle when I blast its brains out.

I keep shooting any zombie that comes near the open window. The glass behind me starts to spider as I’m reloading the weapon. I grab another hand gun and load that too. Tatum is hiding between the passenger seat and the dash. I don’t blame her. We’re in a bad spot and I still haven’t figured out how we’re going to get out of it. There has to be something that I can do. I have to get us out of here before things get any worse.

“Stay put! I’m going out!” I shout above the sound of shattering glass.

The window to my right finally broke. I start firing into the heads of the approaching zombies from both sides. They start to come less frequently so I hurry up and reload my guns. I pick up the baseball bat and jump out of the shattered window. I fire a shot up in the air and the zombies all turn my way. This is a bad idea, but it’s the best I’ve got right now. I run towards the nearby housing addition and hope that the zombies are following me.

I jump over a fence and turn around. Sure enough, the large group of dead decided to follow the easiest meal. They don’t know what they’re in for. I grab one hand gun and start unloading on the zombies. One bullet per monster and I manage to not miss. My Dad always said that I would have great aim although I never fired a hand gun before today. I guess adrenaline can work wonders and right now I’m drowning in it. I hope that the others are okay. I hope that they’re still safe in the auditorium. I hope Tatum, Amber, Macy and Brooke are still safe. Maybe I shouldn’t have left them.

The soft click tells me that this magazine is empty. I shove the gun in my waist band and grab the other one and repeat the process. After about a minute, the clip is empty and I’m left with sixteen zombies and a baseball bat. I guess it’s a good thing that I played softball for six years. Now’s the time to use those skills and pray that I don’t get bitten in the process.

I run towards the nearest zombie and knock its head out of the park. The next two are ground balls, but they’re dead none the less. The four after that are very messy home runs. After that everything just becomes like a really twisted version of Grand Theft Auto. I picture that I’m beating up the characters for money or that I’m getting my money back from the most recent prostitute. It kind of makes everything easier to handle. Finally, I beat the last zombie and I fall to the ground and say hello to my last meal. What can I say? That was disgusting business.

“Are you okay?” Macy asks as she comes running over.

“Yeah. I’m fine.”

I get up as Brooke and Amber join us. My heart starts to calm down and my head feels heavier. Everything stops feeling foggy and I realize that I’ve burned off my supply of adrenaline. It’s kind of like coming down from a high. My head hurts and I’m not sure what’s real right now. When I look around at the numerous bodies, I realize that it wasn’t a dream. I actually killed one hundred zombies in order to save my friends. Damn, I need a nap now.

“Where’s Tatum?” I ask as I start to walk back towards the car.

“She’s still in there. We couldn’t get her to come out.” Macy replies.

“Okay. I’ll get her out of there and then we need to get inside and get everything secured again. Has anyone heard from their families?”

“No. There hasn’t been word… from anyone.” Amber says while looking at the ground.

I wrap my arm around her shoulder and pull her close. She’s the only family I have left now and we aren’t even technically blood. It doesn’t matter though. Over the last few years we’ve gotten pretty close. She’s like a little sister to me and I know how she feels. Losing everyone sucks, but we can’t let it affect us. There’s too much to do and not enough time to do it in.

We make it back to the car and I open the passenger door. Tatum is still curled in a ball. I kneel down and poke her in the shoulder. She turns around and stares at me. Her eyes are red and puffy. Its dark out, but I can still tell that she looks confused. Did she really think that I’d let a few zombies kill me off? It’ll take more than that to keep me down!

“Tatum. It’s okay. I’m right here.” I whisper as I smile and rub her back.

She stares at me for another second before jumping in to my arms. I sit down and pull her in to my lap. It must have been hard for her, knowing that I was out there with that many dead around. I don’t even want to know what she was thinking. She’s another person that’s like a sister to me. We’ve spent so much time together; it’s hard to imagine that we’ve only known each other for a couple of years. I hug her tightly as she nuzzles in to my shoulder.

“It’s alright, Tatum. I’m still here. We’re okay. We’re going to be okay.”

I unfold my legs and help Tatum up. I wrap my arm around her shoulders and drag Amber in with my other arm. We walk in to the band room like that and for some reason I can’t stop smiling. It’s like we’re a band of thieves that just pulled off the biggest heist in history. I’m sad that I’ve lost a lot of people, but I’m really happy that I still have a large group of friends around. I’m going to keep everyone alive for as long as I can.

As we walk in to the band room, I look around for zombies. There doesn’t seem to be any left in here. I kick the doors back in to place and Amber knocks on the doors to the auditorium. Casey lets us in and I’m glad to see that everyone is safe. We get a standing ovation as we walk in and I can’t help but smile. This is my family now and we have to stick together. If I can fight off a hundred zombies, I can fight off a thousand. If it means keeping them safe, I’ll do whatever it takes. I’ll do anything…
