Chapter 1: This is where it all began

We have struggled to survive the cursed faith father left us in when he died five years ago. Mother worked arduously to put food in our stomachs every other night even at the cost of sacrificing her own dinner to us most of the times whenever there is not enough to fed the three of us. Even though the money was not decent mother managed to sent us to school some days. Whenever I tried to assist mother she would always reassured "Don't worry my boy I have everything under control" but I knew she did not have everything under control.

But things went south when mother told us yesterday that we have ate half of the last ration of food. Both Kathy and I were shocked at the news just heard. But I had a solution for it, I told mother to focus on Kathy's education and I will get a job thus mother agreed but Kathy did not agreed because she wanted to help as well but I reassured her that it is I do it because she too young to work and she does work mother will be arrested for making work at such a young age.

The following morning here I was walking within my community Aracan to think of ways to get cash quick. The idea struck me instantly when I was rubbing father's silver chain around my neck. I am glad that I took father's necklace and Kathy took father's favorite gold ring from the box of things that contains father's things before mother pawned them to make us survive the state we are in. Those things reminded us of father. Ezike-l thought if he join the Scavers he will have access to a huge amount that will be beneficial to him and his family.
