The air was suffocating. I stood in the same meadow my life had started in. The sky was cloaked in a twilight, and stars dotted it like sprinkles. All was calm until that bright flash of light. I could hear my name being called in the background, and soon my eyes were shut. When I opened them again images of blood and corpses flashed around. Pain and disgust coursed through my body and I closed my eyes again. To my horror my eyes itched to be opened once more and this time, I could see bottles of beer and drunkards on the floor. Shut eye again. Tears started to swell in my eyes as I still heard my name in the distance. This time I opened my eyes by the millimeter, and a white image greeted me. Confused, I opened my eyes a bit more. It was a doctor's coat. I relaxed my body and opened my eyes completely. I smiled at the doctor. The faint voice calling my name stopped. It was quiet and eerie and my body tensed up once more. The faint voice started again but this time, it wasn't saying my name. It was asking me the question that I have wondered all my life. The question that burns like a fire in the mind. The question I want answered. 𝒲𝒽𝑜 𝒜𝓇𝑒 𝒴𝑜𝓊?
There was a sudden jolt and I woke up. Sweat was raining down my forehead, and my hands were clenched in fists. 𝕀𝕥 𝕨𝕒𝕤 𝕒𝕝𝕝 𝕒 𝕕𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕞. I sat up in my seat panting. When my eyes got accustomed to the dim light, I started taking in my surroundings. It was then that I mentally slapped myself. I was in a plane.
I leaned against the seat as I started to recall what was happening. I was on my way to Seoul, South Korea. From a young age I was quite clever, and had found my way to Seoul National University of Medicine. I has always wanted to become a doctor and was ecstatic that I was on the right track.
" All right everyone. We are about to land. Please buckle in your seatbelts and prepare for a smooth landing. Once again thank you for flying on the Bangtan Airlines." The pilot's voice crackled on the speaker. In a flash every passenger was squirming around in their seat, trying to find the belt and buckle in. It was along flight and even I couldn't wait to get up.
I could tell the plane was starting to descend, as my stomach reached my throat. It was an odd feeling but a joyful one. I released the breath I didn't know I was holding when the plane touched the ground. We starting rolling down the runway I could feel the excitement bubble inside of me.
In a few length's of time the plane came to a halt. As fast as a rabbit on a jetski all of the passengers stood up and started to retrieve their stuff. I was at in the far back of the plane so this process took some time. I thanked the pilot on my way out, and dragged my luggage to the checkout section. It was nighttime in Korea so the lines weren't so crowded. To my liking I was out of the area and made my way outside. Despite the hour, signs of stores were still brightly light up, and cars of all shapes, sizes, and color zoomed past. I waved myself a taxi and put my luggage in the trunk. I hopped on and a cold atmosphere greeted me.
" Where to Miss?", asked the cab driver not even acknowledging my shivering.
" Seoul National University of Medicine please.", I replied and looked out the window. The cab driver nodded and started driving. Or should I say flying. He zoomed through the streets faster than a leopard. It had you quite terrified.
" You must be quite smart to get into that college.", said the cab driver. I was shocked at his sudden need to start a conversation but replied anyway.
" Umm... Yes. Nothing comes for free."
" That is true. You must really know what you are going to do with your life.", he said looking at me threw the review mirror and smiling. I was nonplussed. Know what I am going to do and who I am was something that has always kept hidden from me. My dream came flowing back to me and the air got even colder.
" Never mind. Here we are Miss. And like you say nothing comes for free. 3,800 won please." The cab driver came to a halt and I looked out the window. I had arrived. I came out of the car and handed him the money. Getting luggage out of the car was a bit harder then putting it in. I figured that was because my fingers were numb. I waved down the taxi but still had a uneasy feeling around me.
At the age of eighteen, I didn't know who I was. I bowed my head and turned to look at the building. 𝕆𝕙 𝕞𝕒𝕞𝕒! A tall building stood infant of me. It was painted the most lovely charcoal and had marble pillars holding it up. The lawn was well manicured, and the scent of roses drifted in the air. I smiled and the uneasiness that was hanging around me evaporated. I held my head high and a few words escaped my lips.
" Finally! A New Beginning!"
