Chapter 1 •

Tuesday - January 5th, 1943

I handover my belongings to the house elf who welcomes me at the doors of Hogwarts. He staggers close to me as we go to Headmaster Dippet's office making casual chitchat. I always feel pity towards house elves, people feel they can walk all over them and treat them badly.

I admire the grand castle; the elegant and carefully crafted bits of it, the way the sound of my shoes hitting the floor makes an echo in the large hallways. We arrive at the Headmaster's office, unsure if I should knock or wait for the elf to open the large door I stand there unknowingly. He hesitantly nudges me to enter.

I slowly walk into the vast office leaving the limping house elf with my luggage. Looking around I notice shelves filled unusual belongings and rare artifacts, dust covering many of them. A man with long white hair and short facial hair invites me in. He walks to the front of his old wooden desk. His long thick blue and gold robes trailing behind him as he gives me a warm smile.

"Welcome to Hogwarts Ms. Y/l/n. Please, have a seat" he says waving me to a seat in front of his desk.

"Thank you" I say offering a small smile. I sit in the chair and cross my legs.

"I apologize for having to send a house elf. We would usually send a teacher but they're all teaching of course." He pauses for a moment, "It's rare for us to accept a student in the middle of the year... we're happy to have you joining our school. Anyway, enough chatting. I'm Headmaster Dippet as you probably already know. Before I send you on your way we have to sort you into a house."

He gives me an analytical look. "You look like a worthy Gryffindor to me."

He walks around to a wooden box next to his desk and opens it.

"Ello old mate!" The hat obnoxiously yells. "Oi, what do we have here? A new student in the middle of the school year?! You ought to be special, haven't you?"

Headmaster Dippet rolls his eyes at the talking hat and lowers it onto my head. The hat starts to mumble his racing thoughts.

"Ahhh, you're ambitious- very ambitious indeed. Oh! And cunning too! You would make an amazing leader if you out your mind to it. Although you are exceptionally smart and for that to be placed into Ravenclaw, I think you would be a perfect SLYTHERIN!" It screams.

Professor Dippet takes the magical hat off my head and returns it to the box. "Well, we can't be right all the time" he says.

Headmaster Dippet seems to be very welcoming, just like my old headmaster and professors said he would be.

He takes out his wand and waves it. A dark green suitcase appears with a piece of parchment laying on it. "Your schedule and uniform- and don't worry, your parents already paid for everything. "

I stand up and fix my skirt, "thank you sir. Oh and- I have a question. Where is my dorm?"

"I almost forgot to tell you! The portraits will lead you to your common room and there you'll find your dorm. I assume by the time you're settled in, dinner would have already started. I encourage you to come if you're not too tired from travel." He gives me a small smile and I take my cue to leave. I grab my suitcase and schedule and leave the bizarre office.

I immediately look at my schedule.

Like he said, the portraits were more than happy with helping me find the Slytherin common room.

I say the password given to me and walk in. Immediately, I get the chills. It's numbing down here even with the faintly lit fireplace.

The common room is dim and the light shining in has a green tint to it since the common room is partially underneath the lake. To no surprise, the common room is empty with only one other person in here. It's exceptionally green, but somehow not tacky. There is also a couple of skulls laying around, definitely normal.

Looking around, I see the female quarters sign. I'm relieved I came when class was still in session because I would feel anxious trying to find anything with many people here.

I walk down the decorated hallway until I'm met with a door that has my name written next to it. There are two names above mine: Olive Hornby and Madeline Harper. I enter with hesitation in case someone is inside. Luckily, there was nobody. I glance around until I notice my luggage I gave to the house elf on one of the beds.

The other two beds look completely different than one another. One of them is messy with the covers sloppily pulled over and clothes scattered across it- the other is the complete opposite.

I settle into my new home and sit on the firmly made and surprisingly comfortable bed. I'm relieved that's the itchy looking bed is actually soft and fluffy.

Today has definitely not been as memorable for how worn out I am.

I lay down on my side and look at the parchment paper on my desk. I miss my friends. I should write them a letter tomorrow- and one to my parents too.

Not that I'm ungrateful to be attending Hogwarts, I just didn't want to move to a different school- especially in the middle of my fifth year. My parents said it was because it was a better school than the one I was previously attending... that it was an opportunity they couldn't say no too.

Hopefully the students here are as nice as Professor Dippet was. I came here with butterflies in my stomach and the inability to stop fidgeting with my hands.

I mean I'm still doing that- but Professor Dippet surely helped with making me feel better. In the back of my head, I'm still anxious about what the other people here are like.

Gosh, my mind is all over the place.

"Are you the new girl?" A sweet sounding girl asked making me jump.

"Oh, yeah, Y/n Y/l/n." I stand up and instantly notice how tall she is. She's very pretty and has a comforting appearance about her. Her hair is long, wavy, and blonde which matches her beautiful, pale complexion.

"Madeline Harper." She smiles and extends her hand.

"Nice to meet you" I say shaking her hand and offering her a shy smile.

"Would you like to join me for dinner?" Madeline asks.

"No, I'm okay. I ate something before coming."

"Well, if you have any questions feel free to ask me." She grabs something and leaves, giving me a wave as she goes.
