Nov 11th, 11:25 P.M.
A while later everyone could see in live what was going on at the Hart Plaza. Markus defended his group with no hesitation even after the soldiers bombed their barricade. You and Hank were no longer in danger, and instead of heading to the hospital to check his head, Hank preferred to stay at Jimmy's bar to drink the pain away. At least you got a bandage on his forehead to stop the small bleeding.
The ambient was tense, the people in bar were silent while watching the war scenario on the TV, and when they spoke, it was only whispers. And you were on the same boat. You bit your nails as you watched Markus and his crew being cornered when he turns to the girl beside him, North, and touches her hand. Their plastic skin is shown, they give a tender kiss on each other. Surrounded by soldiers, everything was quiet, everyone gaped.
After that shocking scene, the news channel was interrupted by an important message from the President: "At dawn today, November 12th 2038, thousands of androids invaded the city of Detroit. According to our sources, they originated from CyberLife warehouses believed to have been infiltrated by deviants. Given their overwhelming numbers and the risk of civilian casualties, I have ordered the army to retreat. The evacuation of the city is underway at this very moment. In the coming hours, I will address the Senate to determine our response to this unprecedented situation. I know that public opinion has been moved by the deviants cause. Perhaps the time has come to us to consider the possibility that androids are a new form of intelligent life. One thing is certain: the events in Detroit have changed the world forever. May God bless you and may God bless the United States of America."
"They did it?.." You were incredulous.
"They did it." Hank said with a soft smile.
Markus stood up to give a speech to the people of Detroit, both androids and humans, who would now be accepted and heard. The fight seemed to be coming to an end, and the deaths were worth it.
"Today, our people finally emerged from a long night." He proudly started. You could see the incredible amount of androids around him. "From the very first day of out existence, we have kept our pain to ourselves. We suffered in silence... But now the time has come for us to rise our heads up, and tell humans who we really are..."
Connor was there at the time of the speech, next to Markus, and suddenly he felt something that pulled him into his own mind, bringing him to the Zen Garden. It was cold, and dark. He didn't understand what was happening or why he was there. Then he saw his handler.
"Amanda?..Amanda! What's... What's happening?" He asked with difficulty, the cold was so intense that his body kept shivering.
"What was planned from the very beginning..." She said in an unsurprising way. "You were compromised and you became a deviant. We just had to wait for the right moment to resume control of your program."
"Resume control?.." He protested. "Y-You can't do that!"
"I'm afraid I can, Connor..." Said Amanda. "Don't have any regrets. You did what you were designed to do. You accomplished your mission."
The A.I. disappeared, leaving Connor alone in the cold and stormy Zen Garden. "AMANDA!" He hopelessly called. He didn't know what to do, but he did know it has to be fast, or something bad is going to happen.
Meanwhile, you and everybody in the bar were listening to Markus's speech. Part of you is proud to participate in this revolution, in a way. The other part is just a little bit scared for what is going to happen next.
You could see Connor a bit from afar, something was off. For a moment it looked like he was trying to draw his own gun. His arm was trembling, as if he was trying to fight this "urge" to use the weapon.
"What the hell is he doing?" You narrowed your eyes, mumbling.
But little did you know, that Connor was fighting his own system to prevent the worst from happening.
"By the way... I always leave an emergency exit in my programs, but a 'trigger' has to activate it. You never know..."
"A trigger?"
He walked until he reached to a kind of pedestal. This could be his salvation, a way out. But he was already weak, close to the total doom of his system. If that scanner needed a password, the "trigger" would do.
A trigger... A motivation? That.. That must be it...
When it comes to motivation, Connor first thought was about you. If he was still a machine, he'd probably think about nothing. Stop the deviants was never a motivation to do anything, because he would gain nothing in return. But now, his main reason to continue is the thought of seeing you again, to see you laugh, to hug you and to kiss you just one more time. Because he loves you, and that's above everything else he knows.
He put his hand on the scanner and finally managed to escape, returning to the real world. He realized what he was about to do when he saw the gun in his hand, so he put it away. And he acted as if nothing had happened.
"...The moment where we forget our bitterness and bandage our wounds. When we forgive our enemies. " Markus was still speaking at the moment. "Humans are both creators and our oppressors and tomorrow... We must make them our partners. Maybe even one day our friends. But the time for anger is over. Now we must build a common future, based on tolerance and respect. We are alive! And now, we are free!"
The androids celebrated at the visionary words of Markus, who was proud and very happy to have achieved his greatest goal: the freedom of his people. It was a beautiful scene that carried triumph and hope. That moment meant a lot of things, but the main thing was that, from now on, androids were free to make their life choices.
And so was Connor.
