It's raining.

It's been raining all day.

It's Jungkook's birthday, and he hasn't been able to play outside.

It was going to be the worst birthday ever for him.

He didn't like the rain; it gave him nightmares of thousands of tiny creatures landing on his face and carrying harmful bacteria with them. He could also never see through it, which made it even scarier. He didn't like the sound of the rain slamming into the ground, attacking every bug or creature that was too small to defend itself. He didn't like how it would make the clouds look scary and dark grey. Not to mention his parents were working, so he's still at school and it's 6:30.

But Yuta, his brother, came over from the middle school nearby and bought him a small pizza while they waited for their parents to pick them up. The other fifth-graders were playing dodgeball in the gym while parents were coming to pick them up. After eating some of the pizza and soda Yuta got him, he went to play with the other kids. He had to hold on to the whistle his teacher gave him and the paper crown he had on his head.

Jungkook had always been good at sports. He was only ten, officially, but he had already helped his team take home five golden trophies for league championships. He also liked to play basketball with Yuta who, despite being two years older, always lost. That explains why he is now one of the last six survivors in the game that started with about forty. And he probably would've won if it wasn't for his brother Yuta calling for him to go home. Still, Jungkook scooped up his things and ran outside to his parents' car.

Yuta had wrapped his jacket around Jungkook's head and shielded him with his backpack from the rain. Jungkook jumped inside the warm car and was greeted by smiles from his parents. Yuta got into the car and their father drove off.

"Happy Birthday, Kookie," his mother softly said in a sing-songy voice while handing him a cupcake. It had a candle on it that was the number ten.

"Thanks, mom!" Jungkook closed his eyes and promptly blew out the candle. It was a vanilla cupcake with blue icing, a caramel drizzle, and blueberries and strawberries on top. He was allergic to strawberries but finished the cupcake almost immediately.

"There's more cake at home that's exactly like your cupcake," his father says, keeping his eyes glued to the road.

"Really?!" Jungkook exclaims, practically jumping in his seat.

"Yup," his mother answers. "And we bought a big pizza and other food for you guys to eat."

"Are we going to play pirates?" Jungkook wondered. They always played pirates on his birthdays after school.

"No, I'm afraid we can't because of the rain, buddy. I'll figure out something else we could do," his father answered.

"Okay..," Jungkook sinks in his seat and thinks about something else to say. He jumps back up, "Mrs. Yoo gave me a whistle! And a bag of candy!" Jungkook pulls the truly large bag of candy out of his backpack.

"Wow, that's a lot of candy! I guess you don't need your cake at home, then--"

"Nonononono! I won't eat the candy!"

His parents both laughed and then the car went silent for a while. The rhythmic sound of the windshield wipers collaborated with the millions of droplets pitter-pattering on the window. Jungkook still didn't like the rain, but looking into it sometimes made him focus on one thing and forget about it. He looked to his left to see that Yuta was texting on his phone. The rain didn't bother him, how come it bothered Jungkook?
