Bentley woke up to the tossing of the car that she was traveling in. She sat up and looked out the window, seeing the city that they were driving through. From what she was told, Willow Creek was a beautiful, rich city. From that description, Bentley had expected to move to a town where there were mansions on beautiful green hills, separated by the mountains, streams, and acres of property. She wasn't as involved as the other seven who agreed to move to a new town after they received all their money, but she still expected the best city like the others. If only she knew this was the actual city that they had chosen.
"You actual skank." Bentley said to the person sitting next to her. Bradon took out his headphones. "What?" He asked. "I agreed to move my life from our home town to Willow Creek because you said there was going to be everything here for us. Opportunity, class, and change to be made in a community. You didn't tell me this community was going to be nothing more than undeveloped lots!" Bentley said. Bentley tried to stay quiet so that the neighboring friends around her wouldn't hear. However, Alex, their driver, had eavesdropped on the conversation. And he gave Bentley his opinion. "I'm sorry about the inconvenience to your hopes and dreams, Bentley. But not everyone can afford to develop houses on these expensive lots. But this truly is a great city, and this is a great area to live in as well. The house we built is in a safe and classy neighborhood that is closeby, and tucked away, from the urban area of the town."
Bentley rolled her eyes, and chose to look out the window instead of complaining any longer. She looked at the houses that they passed. The houses were all unique, made of brick or stucco. None of which had a garage on the front side of the house. This community was so much more different than their old town. There, all the houses were similar to own another, made of vinyl siding of either brown, white, or blue. All of which had the garage doors next to the front door, and most people kept their additional cars parked on the streets, making the neighborhood roads chaotic and crowded.
They continued to drive through the neighborhood, no one talking, and no radio to be played. There was no noise other than the hum of the tires against the freshly paved roads.
They finally reached the back of the neighborhood, where most of the houses were built. No one else had seen the finished house other than Alex, who had only seen photos and the house layout. Everyone had so many ideas for what the house should be like, but no one was able to see the finished result until now. Alex turned into the driveway of their mansion on the left side of the road. They quickly hopped out of the car to see what their house looked like. As soon as Bentley got out, she was greeted by a tall stucco wall and a two-car garage. There weren't any windows on the front side of the first floor, but looking above, Bentley could see the open patio that they had asked for, and above that the third floor with plenty of windows to spear the first floor. What does everyone think? Alex asked. The three of them who had also ridden in the car with Alex stared at the house, disappointed in what they saw. The second car rolled in, bringing in the rest of the eight people total.
Kade got out of the truck. "Are you serious? This is it?" Kade asked. "It has everything that we wanted!" Alex yelled back. "Its hideous! A mansion is supposed to be a nice house! This is a bunch of rooms glued together!" Kade cried. He wasn't wrong. The second floor of the house was mostly open space, where the patio was in the front of the house, above the garage, and in the front of the house was the pool, which blocked the front of the house with its large glass frames to show the deep, blue water. "It has everything we want. Just not the way we want it." Joseph said.
Carrying in most of their personal belongings that hadn't already been moved in before arriving, the group walked up the main stairs, which was a narrow concrete staircase that lead to the side of the patio. They dropped their stuff off on the concrete floor, looking at the open space that was covered by the third floor, which was an acting roof. The kitchen and dining room was opened to the patio, which would be beautiful in a tropical climate, but Northeast Oregon was not the place to have such a styled home.
"This house literally makes me want to kill myself." Kade said. "It has the pool you all asked for!" Alex cried. "We meant a pool in the ground! In the earth! Not blocking the front of the house by covering the first floor!" Tyler yelled. "Creeks Architecture tried to make this house as nice as possible, but with all the requests that you all asked for, there wasn't a lot that they could do to make the house the best that it could be." Alex said. "Do I at least have a bedroom out of the basement?" Bradon asked. "Yes. You are actually on the third floor." Alex said, pointing to the stairs by the dining room that led to the third floor. "You're kidding, right?" Bradon said. Alex shook his head. Bradon grabbed his bags and walked to the stairs. "Amelia, Bentley, and Kade. Your rooms are on the first floor." Alex said, looking down at the pages with the layout of the house. "Where's the stairs that go to the first floor?" Amelia asked. Alex studied the papers. "That hallway." Alex said, pointing to the hall that led to the back of the house. "Everyone else has room down that hall as well." Alex said.
They all grabbed their things and walked down the halls, Tyler being the first room, JJ being the next, Alex leaving after, and Joseph being the room by the stairs. The last three headed downstairs to the first floor, which were down another hallway from the living room.
"This is ridiculous.' Kade said, going to his bedroom next to the living room.
Bentley looked at the boxes of her supplies for her house sitting on her bed. Her empty room was hidden in the back of the house, at the end of the first floor hallway. Bentley tossed her duffel bags on the bed and dropped the suitcases off in the middle of the room. She flopped onto her new bed and let out a long breath, and sighed heavily. "Stop." Amelia said from across the hall. Bentley looked out her open door to see Amelia, standing across the hall in her room. Directly across the hall were their two rooms. What would be annoying about that.
"You shut up." Bentley responded.
"You! Shhhhhut up!" Amelia cried.
"You shut up!" Bentley yelled. The two stared at each other. Bentley couldn't handle this right now. She slammed her door shut and walked into her bathroom to hide. When she entered, she found a second door, which when Bentley opened it, she realized it was a door to Amelia's room. The two had to share a bathroom.
"You shut up!" Bentley cried, slamming the door shut.
Most bedrooms that have their own bathroom have a door. Kades room, however, did not. He looked at his room. There were no windows, and no doors. There was no door to the bathroom, and there was no door that separates the living room from his room. Kade listened to the screaming of Bentley and Amelia down the hall, while looking at his nearly empty room. Nothing but a bed and a dresser. "I have nothing in here." Kade said under his breath. "What did you say?" Amelia called from down the hall. Without any doors, his room was open to the living room space outside, making it just as open as any other common space in the house. "Nothing!" Kade said, throwing the few bags of supplies from home onto his bed. "I need a fucking door!" Kade cried.
Kade walked out into the garage, where he found a screw driver, sitting next to a two gallon container of gasoline. He then wandered around the house, trying to find where the other bedroom were, the ones where Alex, Joseph, JJ, and Tyler were living in. Kade walked down the hallway where the other three bedrooms were, then down the four-bedroom hallway, and then up the stairs to the third floor. Kade reached the top, looking out over the empty neighborhood. The third floor was mostly level roofs and Bradon's bedroom. Kade walked into his room, finding that the fourth wall was made entirely of large windows and tinted glass door, in the back of the room was another tinted door that led to a large patio.
"Wow!" Kade said. "An entire floor to yourself, large windows, and a patio?" Kade asked, standing against the frame of the door. "Yah, it's pretty amazing, better than the base-" Bradon began, interrupted when Kade sat on the floor and began unscrewing the door from the frame. "What are you doing?" Bradon asked. Kade looked up at Bradon. "I need a door. My room doesnt have one." Kade said.
"I need a door! My room is outside!" Bradon called. "I dont have a single door in my room!" You have three! Closet door, bathroom door, and entry door. Just replace this one with one of the other doors." Kade said.
"No! Theyre my doors!" Bradon cried.
"I dont care! I am the first bedroom to the door. If some hick from the streets walked into the house they would come to my room first and I would instantly die because they could just waltz on in!" Kade cried.
"No! Im keeping my doors! You are way safer than me! You're on the first floor with other people. I am on the top floor all alone. If I dont have a door, then I will be murdered alone." Bradon said.
"How unfortunate for you. But the thing is, I dont care. So you can die." Kade said.
"Why don't you die first!" Bradon cried.
"Because the world wouldn't be able to function without my presence now you die first!" Kade cried, taking the door off the wall and carrying it onto the balcony towards the stairs. Bradon ran out of the room and grabbed onto the door. "Let go!" Kade cried. "You let go! This is my door!" Bradon yelled back. "Not anymore!" Kade remarked. Bradon lost his grip, and the door was flung over Kade's shoulders, going over the balcony and landing on the patio, the glass frames of the door smashing. Bradon covered his face with his hands, sighing heavily. "Keep it." Bradon said, walking into his room, and slamming an imaginary door in Kade's face.
Kade brought the broken door to his room, where he leaned the door against the frame. He screwed in the door to the wall, and looked at his work. The broken door didn't give Kade any more privacy than before, and the door couldnt close because there was no lock set for the door installed. Frustrated, Kade returned the screwdriver to the garage.
Kade set the screwdriver in the drawer, and looked over, through the open garage door, to see a group of young adults, possibly around the same staring at the mansion. There was a blonde set, and a brunette set. Almost like two sets of identical twins, but of different genders.
"It's a very nice house." The brown-haired girl commented. "That's cool." Kade said, shutting the door and walking towards the door to walk inside. "We're the Taylors. Two sets of twins! Believe it or not. Our poor parents." She said, laughing at her comment. "We just love down the road from here and wanted to stop and say hi. What brings you to Willow Creek?" She asked. "I wasn't asking for you're life story." Kade dryly said to the girl, walking out into the driveway. "We came here because we're rich. End of story. Now please get off my property before I call the police." He said. The others began to back off. The brown haired girl began to stutter. "I-I'm sorry! We just wanted to welcome you to the neighborhood- and-" she began, only to stop when Kade turned around and walked back to the house. "That's so rude of you!" The blonde girl called out. "Thank you!" Kade replied, shutting the garage door and walking inside, up the stairs, and into the kitchen patio to see the kids returning home. "Who were you talking to?" Joseph asked. "Just a group of kids trying to sell me drugs." Kade replied. "You have enough already." Joseph said sarcastically. Kade rolled his eyes and went back downstairs.
Everyone entered the dining room later that night for dinner, grabbing a slice of pizza that they had ordered from Pizza Hut. No one said anything. Everyone sat around the table, quietly eating their pizza as they played AJR music from the surround sound speakers in the room. Alex shut the devices off. "I get it everyone. This place isn't everything we hoped it would be. But it'll get better." Alex said. "How? I don't have a door anymore because Kade stole it!" Bradon said. "I don't have a real bedroom I'm just some extension to the living room with a 6 drywall barrier!" Kade called back. "We have millions of dollars and we didn't have the money to build the two of us our own bathrooms?" Bentley called out, referring to her and Amelia. "Kade at least you're door will open the right direction! My door opens the wrong direction and slams into my bed!" Joseph cried. "Everyone stop!" Alex yelled. "I get it. Everyone had a bad day. But this is our house, and we can fix it and we can adjust to it. We arent spending all of our money on our house. Remember that we still have to improve this city without money. That was the point of moving hear. I want everyone to get over you're petty opinions of the house and except that not everything is going to be perfect all the time." Alex cried, getting everyone to consider their acts of the day. Alex looked over at Kade. "I expect you to apologies to those poor kids you got short with earlier today." Alex said. Kade looked down at the table and took a drink of Dr. Pepper. Everyone else looked at each other with guilt. Alex stared everyone down. "Just because we now have the money to buy things doesn't mean we should spend it all. Don't let wealth get to your head. I see the way you're all acting and its disgusting. Wealth is earned, so are your rights in this house." He added. Tyler grabbed the pitcher of water, filling up his glass, "Mom" he whispered into Bentley's ear. She covered her face to hide her laugh. "Alright." He said, signaling his exit, leaving everyone to sit in awkward silence. Bradon called back to Alex, who was leaving the room. "Can I at least get a door? My room is freezing!" He called.
