I. A. I. 1 - FIRST DAY
I'M AN INTROVERT and today is my first day of school as a grade 11 student.
New school means new faces. My mother, Jolly, is encouraging me to make friends on the first day of school.
Compared to me, she's quite an outgoing person just like her name.
"Mom, I'm not seven years old anymore. I can handle myself, alone." I groaned.
"But dear, you haven't made friends since elementary." Mom pointed out.
I gave her a bored look. "Do I look like I need one? Besides, there's Sushi. That's one good friend."
Mom shook her head. "Sushi's not human but a cat."
"What's wrong with that?" I lift an eyebrow.
Sushi was a stray kitten. I can still remember how skinny she used to be. Her floppy fur is pure white while her eyes are a pair of sky blue. She's too adorable to ignore. So I brought her home a year ago. She loves to scratch on my pillow but I don't mind.
"You don't even eat sushi." Mom scoffs.
Yes, I don't like eating sushi. How ironic, right?
"Exactly. I named her Sushi because I can never eat her. Well, at least we could be friends. Right, Sushi?" Leaning down, I took the furball in my arms, cradling her like a baby.
"Meow..." Sushi responded.
"See." I grinned.
"You need someone you can talk to and depend on. Experience Girls Night and go shopping." Mom explained, watching my expression.
I rolled my eyes in annoyance. "Mom, I have you. That's more than enough girl friend."
Mom sighed, defeated. "Come here, dear," she opened her arms.
"I don't think so. Mom, you know I'm not a fan of 'touchy feely'." I reminded her.
Just then, Sushi jumped off of me.
She glares at me. "Ire..." she called my nickname.
I groaned with my eyes rolling before receiving her hug.
"Dear, I know you're a grown up now, but you still need to learn how to open up yourself to other people. You need to blend in. Otherwise, you'll be alone someday." She told me.
"I've always been alone."
"You still have me. You're not alone." Mom eyed me
I sighed. "Whatever mom." I pulled away from her. "Look, I will give it a try for you."
"Not for me. For you." She pointed her index finger on my chest.
"Sure thing mom." I grunted.
Mom gave me a big hug with a smile painted on her face. "Very good then." She pulled away giving me space to breathe.
Sometimes, my mom still see me as her little girl, when in fact I'm not anymore.
I'm already seventeen years old, for Pete's sake!
I glanced at my wristwatch, "can I go now?"
"Just make sure to make friends."
"I told you, I will try." I reminded her.
She just nods before giving me a packed lunch, "here, take this. I'm not sure if I'll be coming home late tonight, but not to worry, your dinner will be just in the refrigerator. Microwave it, okay?"
I rolled my eyes, "mom, I told you I can handle myself. Anyway, I'm going. Bye."
She gave me another bear hug before letting me go.
And my senior high life began as an introvert.
