'I should get going,' I stand up and get my stuff.
'You don't. You can stay here if you want,'' Travis says and I turn to look at him.
'You know I have to be back there if I want to live a normal life after I turn 18,' I explain for the tenth time this week. Travis just nods and walks me to the door. I hug him and say goodbye. I step out into the warm summer air and start walking to the orphanage. As I walk, I keep my head down. I know a few people from my school who live in this area and I don't want them to see me here. I make my way to the orphanage and as soon as I go in, I see Ms. Petra lining up all the children. She sees me and waves me over. I walk up to her and she pushes me into the line. I stand between Ollie and Sally. I ask them what is going on. They say that someone is coming to adopt. I nod and try to remember what I have to say. After a few minutes, a young couple walks in and smiles at all of us. We all smile back. They start to walk from the right to the left meaning I'm the third. After a while they reach me.
'Hello, my name is Rosemary and I am 16 years old. I love to play the piano and I get good grades. My favorite subject is math,' I recite very boringly. They stare at me and then nod and move on. I have done this like 500 times. When they're done with listening to all of our names and interest, they make their decision in about a week. Usually, after the first round, they chose a group of kids and then get to know them better. I've been in that group about 2 times in the last 5 years.
I go to my room and put on my headphones and some music before I start studying for tomorrow. A lot of kids here don't think it is important to study but that's what will help me in the future.
When finished with my homework I wait for dinner. In the meantime, I do some extracurricular work. At 6 pm sharp I hear Ms. Petra calling dinner. All of the kids rush down to the dining room. I'm not even surprised when I see whiteish mashed potatoes with yellowish stew. I sit down and start eating it. I eat as fast as I can and then go back to my room. After a few minutes, my roommate Linda walks in. We don't get along very well. She goes straight to her bed and lies down. I stay up for a few hours reading and then go to sleep as well.
