A loud neigh startles me from my sleep. I drag myself out from under the bench. There it was again. I jog over to the fence where I think it came from. Peering through the fence I see it. A horse. But it is starving. It's ribs are showing, but his head is held high. A man hits it, again and again, until he draws blood. I freeze in horror. The horse suddenly lashes out with a hind hoof, catching the man in the chest. He stumbles back, grunting. He yells at the horse, and runs.

I scale the fence with ease. Running over to the horse, I realise the horse is chained by his neck, cutting into his skin. Frantically I release it, and clamber onto his back. Now what? I had never even seen a horse before, let alone ride one. The horse turns his head and looks at me quizzically. I tentatively squeeze with my legs, hoping it was the right thing. The horse steps forward

Suddenly, the man runs around the corner, brandishing a larger whip. The horse rears in terror. No longer restrained, he gallops at the fence and leaps it. I struggle to stay on. He careers wildly down the street, desperate to escape.
