Celine Waterford woke up to the annoying chirping of the alarm clock. She groggily reached out and disabled it. She squinted, attempting to open her eyes but immediately regretted it as the blinding sunlight attacked her eyes. She pulled up the blanket and checked her phone underneath the newly formed shelter. Nothing new.

She reluctantly got out of bed and drew the curtains of the windows. She let the calm breeze caress her face. She planted her arms on the window sill and leaned through the window. The city was thriving, cars blitzed along the roads and the birds flew to the trees with prey for their young. Chirping and honking filled her ears. Even after 9 years this place amazed her with the perfect coordination of nature and modernization.

She quickly brushed her teeth and ran down the fleet of stairs for a cup of morning coffee. Her father was coming home today! After a month of ferocious investigating he was finally coming home. Celine thought about all the interesting investigations her father used to talk about. He would always take her to his office and allow her to participate in the investigations and she would always crack the case with minimum effort. But oddly enough, this time however neither were her opinions asked for nor did her father share any information with her. To be perfectly honest nothing annoyed her more at the moment. Did he think she was not good enough for whatever he was dealing with? Or did he fear something? Whatever it was, it was clearly getting on her nerves a lot more than she had anticipated.

Celine carelessly poured a handful of coffee into the coffee maker's bubbling hot water. She channeled all of her annoyance at her father into the lid of the coffee maker. The lid closed with a loud thump startling her.

She took a glance at her reflection in huge mirror near the opening to the kitchen. She saw a young girl with long, smooth onyx black hair staring back at her. Her pleasant olive complexioned skin and rosy thin lips were her most eye catching attributes. Celine was tired of people complimenting her on her beautiful blue eyes. She didn't mind compliments but she resented what came after that. " It's a shame your glasses have to cover them up" they would say. Celine would always smile sheepishly but she never really appreciated the comment.Deciding that she had had enough of staring at her self she moved away.

She sighed and sank into her couch wandering into a deep thought. She did that very often, her eyes fixated on an object but her mind wandering  beyond confines.

Celine had to admit, although annoyance was the primary emotion here, she felt something else too, tugging at the back of her mind. Fear. Something clearly felt out of place. Everyone at the Investigation Department refused to give out any information and her father had been gone for a month.

The beeping of the coffee machine jolted her back to reality. Oh well! Whatever it was, her father would be back in time for her birthday party. She was turning seventeen and now her father had to keep his promise of letting her quit school and join his Investigation team.

She walked up to her beeping coffee maker and flipped the switch.

School was a waste of time anyway. She always got straight As and frankly the syllabus was of little to no interest to her. Being born with Cognitive exousia had its disadvantages. She was constantly looking for something to ponder, something to solve or crack. To Celine very few pleasures competed with that of which evolved from solving a difficult problem.

With the excitement of getting to see her father again she grabbed the newspaper and the drink. She sank into her majestic red velvet couch once again. The couch brought so many different memories to her; the time she thought that she would die laughing as a result of one of her father's hideous jokes, or the time when she buried her face into her father's chest and wept for hours as his caring arms embraced her for support. She missed him, terribly.

She drew all the air around her with a deep sigh and sipped her coffee. The warm liquid seeped into her system, relaxing her muscles and her coursing mind. Savoring the taste, she reached for her newspaper.

Terrifying silence followed utter disbelief once her eyes fell on the photo in the front page. The cup dropped with a sharp clatter and scalding hot liquid escaped onto the floor. Her eyes welled up with tears at the sight of the limp body in the paper
. Bloody and cold, a figure lay on the tarmac. She could feel her world spinning out of control.

Another wave of hysteria and dismissal hit. But the latter didn't stay for long for she knew there was no mistaking the identity of the body. The same kind eyes that once welcomed her with open arms now stared back at her lifelessly. All was over, there was nothing else left for her. She knew this void would never be filled again.
