Chapter One:

            {Running}

The howl of our warriors woke me, it was still pitch black outside but the howl that I heard meant one thing. We were being attacked. I got out of my bed pulling on a pair of jeans and a shirt that were lying on my bedroom floor. I ran down the hallway banging on all of the doors to wake people up as I ran to my father’s office. He was already shouting orders and moving around his office while my mother started to yell at the woman to gather the children.

“Dad what is going on?” I yelled, as I looked around the room my eyes landing on my best friend Max who was holding his side as a stream of blood came running out.

“Rouges attacked the borders there were so many I barely got away to signal the warriors.” Max looked me in the eyes knowing my next question he shook his head.

“He didn’t make it out. He fought them off giving me time to run. They killed Owen Annabelle.” My heart dropped to my gut as my father hung his head and my mother whipped her own tears away knowing they had no time to mourn their own son’s death.

“Where is he?” I asked staring Max in the eyes.

“East side, by the river bank.” I turned and sprinted out of the house ignoring my parent’s screams telling me to come back. I wasn’t going to leave my big brother out there.

My blonde hair whipped around behind me as I ran pushing myself as I neared the riverbank. The smell of blood hit me before I saw it; pools of blood covered the grass, as Wolfs from my own pack lay motionless on the ground. Limbs were scattered around after being torn from people I grew up with, boys I went to high school with. Men I trained with, and woman that I helped make Sunday brunch with then my eyes landed on him. His blonde hair was stained red with blood and there were multiple wounds that had blood running out of them but his chest still moved as he tried to take in more air.

“Owen.” I said as I kneeled beside him tears running down my face as I placed my hands over his wounds trying to stop the bleeding the best I could.

“Anna?” His voice was so quiet that if I weren’t a wolf I would have never heard him.

“You’re going to be fine. I’m going to get you out of here.” I said as I felt my jeans get wet. I looked down and sucked in my breath, Owens blood had covered my jeans and soaked them through.

“Get out of here. Save the kids, they want the kids.” I stared at Owen in confusion.

“I wont leave you Owen.” A small smile pulled up on Owens face as his hand gently squeezed mine and his green eyes looked into mine.

“Save them Anna, You’re the Alpha now. Save them.” Tears rolled down my face as Owens head fell to the side and his body went completely still.

“Looks like I get to kill two alphas for the price of one.” I felt my body surge with power as my wolf began to growl begging to be released.

“You are going to regret the day you decided to come into my territory.” I turned around and that’s when I felt it.

I sucked in a breath as my eyes flew open. I sat up slowly getting up off the forest floor careful not to wake any of the kids I had sleeping on and by me. My hand went to my belly where the long jagged claw marks scarred my skin.

“We should get moving.” I said as Max walked up next to me pulling on his black t -shirt that was still stained in his own blood.

“Give the kids time to sleep, lets get the sleds hooked up and ready to go.” Max nodded his head as he turned and went to get his all hooked up. Since the night our pack was slaughtered Max and I had been on the run with 20 kids all under the age of 7. They were the only survivors that night, along with max and me now we were all each other had.

I got to work on attaching all of the sleds together. It was the only way to transport all of the kids since none of them had shifted yet they had no way to run and some couldn’t even walk yet. Max and I each took 10 kids the older ones helped in keeping the young kids safe in place as max and I ran through the forest.

Once max and I were ready we each slowly began to pick up sleeping kids and stared to load them into the sleds and tucked them in with blankets to keep them warm since it was December and it was only going to get colder while Max and I ran in wolf form.

“Momma.” I smiled as I picked Levi up. He was the youngest only being 1 and a half.

I took him into my arms and he instantly snuggled into my neck. His long brown hair covered most of his face and even through he wasn’t my actual son I felt a connection to him. I knew his mom she was a friend on mine who had been killed after watching her mate die, I promised her I would take care of Levi like he was my own and that’s what I planned on doing as long as I lived.

Levi fell back to sleep in my arms not long after I picked him up but when it was time to start moving I handed him to Ben one of the older boys who held on top him while we ran.  We would run for days never going to the same place, never running in a straight line, never staying somewhere long enough to leave a clear scent and never getting in the way of another pack.

“Ready?” I turned to look at Max and I nodded my head.

“Lets go.” I shifted into my wolf while max shifted into his wolf as well. We shoved our faces into the snow slipping the ropes around our necks before we started running. That’s what our lives would always be, Running.
