Chess' original owner had to move out of town and gave him and his siblings up to a shelter when they were still very young. Cade saw them and, knowing Alice likes grey-striped cats, picked one up for her as a gift. Alice fell in love with the kitten from first sight and named him after the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland. Chess also got very attached to her and she became his favorite "servant" (his words). He makes sure to purr her to sleep when she's anxious and to kill all the bugs in the house (later apartment) so they wouldn't bother her.
