The wisteria trees always seem so much happier when protecting the demon slayers who seek my family's aid. They flow in the wind, but also in the wake of a swordsman's brilliant slashes. They must wish they could always dance to the songs of the birds.
Us humans aren't the only creatures protected by these trees, though. Our grand garden of flowers and medicinal herbs can also live in peace knowing they won't be trampled by the demons. All thats left is to weed them and that is my daily chore.
"Hey! Hey! Hey! Why are you pulling out these flowers??" A demonslayer with the head of a boar asked seeming bored and not having much else to do.
"Flowers? These are weeds, I need to pull them up so that these herbs won't wilt, sir?" I winced as I pricked my thumb on a particularly prickly weed.
"Sir...? (Hmm, I like the sound of that) I'm Sir...no, Master Inosuke! The strongest pig around!" Inosuke laughed to himself with his head cocked back and hands on his hips.
"Wait, you're bleeding. THESE MUST BE DEMON WEEDS YOU ARE FIGHTING!!! I'll help too since I AM THE STRONGEST DEMON SLAYER!!!" Inosuke then began to pull up all the plants he could fit into his fists at a time.
"Oh wait Master Inosuke! You are pulling out the good plants too!" I panicked and grabbed Inosuke's hands before he could rip out more of the precious herbs.
"EH? These ones aren't demon plants?"
"No, those are medicinal herbs Master Inosuke." I giggled. If it weren't for the boar's mask, I could have sworn that Master Inosuke's face had turned bright red.
"These thorny ones with the small yellow buds on them are the weeds that I need to get rid of. The rest are good plants." I explained smoothly, still smiling to myself thinking about how adorable Master Inosuke's naivety is.
"I'm strong! So let me fight these demon plants! They'll be no match for Master Inosuke!"
"Sure! I could use the help if you want to!" I beamed, excited to have some company and perhaps make a new friend.
"Hahaha! I got you now demon flower! GARDENING PIG ASSAULT!!!" Inosuke yelled, grasping the thorns of many weeds and pulling with all his might. He pulled so hard that he fell backwards with a large thud when the weed's roots had finally given up.
"Master Inosuke! Are you alright?!" I rushed over, concerned about the demon slayer.
"Hahaha! See, I told you that these demon plants would be no match for Master Inosuke!" I could swear he was smiling beneath the mask.
"But... Your hands..."
"Huh?" Inosuke was confused as to what I was concerned about.
"You grabbed the thorns..." I trailed off.
"Oh, look at my hands!" Inosuke shoved his hands towards my face so I could see them. "No scratches! Master Inosuke is super tough!" Inosuke cheered.
I on the otherhand, was mesmerized by his hands and held them in my own.
"Huh?" Inosuke let out, startled.
His hands were so tough. Almost hard as rock, probably from gripping his swords.
"You're right, you are very strong! These hands are strong enough to pull out the toughest weeds and to slay the strongest demons. You can hold the whole world in strong hands like these." These hands had brought me back to the realization that many who come to this Wisteria Manor, never return. And many friends are never heard from again.
Inosuke seemed in a daze as I said this, like he loved being praised. Yet, my only hope was that I could always remember those who protect us and these strong hands. Even if I never see them again.
