The Balcony

Kyungsoo

As I laid in bed, the covers snuggled close to my bare chest, I found myself staring out at the balcony. That balcony was the whole reason we took the apartment in the first place. Ever since I was a child, I've loved to look at the sky. I wasn't necessarily looking to become an astronomer or an astronaut or anything of that nature, I just liked the sky. Looking at the sky always seemed to make whatever I had going on in my world seem so small and meaningless, like one tiny piece in a huge puzzle. So, as soon as we saw that balcony, he knew just as well as I did that there was no other place for us.

Eventually, I turned my attention back to Ryeowook. He was getting dressed now, as our three-hour time slot had just reached its end. He slid his denim pants back on and sat on the bed to button up his white, cotton shirt. Bending over, he put on his black socks first and then his brown, leather shoes.

"I'll text you when I can," he said to me, laying his grey, fleece jacket over his bent arm instead of putting it on.

"Okay," I said. He came over to where I was laying and pressed a fleeting kiss to my temple. He always did that. I could never tell if it was his way of showing me affection or his way of consoling me.

He walked to the bedroom before turning around once more. "Bye," Ryeowook said, his face dimly lit with a smile.

"Bye," I said, using all my strength to return his smile. Then, in the next few seconds, he disappeared and I heard the front door close.

I had gotten used to not walking him to the front door. Before, I always saw it as a way to spend just a few more seconds with him. He didn't mind it before. I often thought he liked it. Then someone came walking down the hall right as we shared one last kiss goodbye. They didn't know us, but it still scared him. That was the last time I walked to him to the door.

"If anything, any rumor or even the smallest tip, got back to my wife, it'd be over," he had said. What exactly would be over was still a mystery to me. His marriage, his career, our relationship, hell, maybe all of the above.

"Hyung, I'm home!" Jongin's loud voice startled me a little. I was dressed and up by now, deciding to channel all of my feelings into making an early dinner. "Hey, Soo," he said with a faint smile, coming into the kitchen and setting his stuff on the counter.

I smiled back, watching as he took his jacket off. "Hi," I replied.

"Oh, before you go to work, you're going to have to fill the tank up," he said as he carried it over to the old, wooden coat hanger I always said we should have gotten rid of. "It's not at danger level yet, but I know how you get with gas, so I didn't want you to be alarmed."

"Okay, thanks," I said, laughing a little. He vanished into his bedroom for a while, most likely unpacking his overnight bag and getting ready for a shower. I always called him my owl because his work schedule kept him out most of the night. It was easy to see how exhausted he was when he came home, but he would never complain -- not in front of me anyway.

He came back out into the open kitchen/living area. "What time does your shift end?" he asked. I had gathered my things for work at this point, so I was getting ready to head out the door.

"10:15," I said with my back towards him as I put my jacket on. "I made dinner and put it in the oven. You just have to heat it up whenever you get hungry."

"Thanks, hyung," he said in reply. I shifted back around to grab my stuff off the counter but was taken back when I saw he was wearing only a pair of old, grey sweatpants.

"Really?" I said, looking him up and down briefly in disapproval. He looked down at himself, looking confused

"What?" he questioned.

"Can't you at least wait until I leave to walk around half-naked?"

He smirked and chuckled. "Does my being half-naked bother you?"

I swallowed, suddenly feeling a small wave of heat wash over my face. "No."

"Then, problem solved," he said with a smug smile. I just rolled my eyes, slightly grinning to lighten the mood, and adjusted my jacket so it was on all the way. "You should go before you're late. I can't be the only one working hard to pay rent around here."

"Okay, okay," I said with a laugh, looking around to make sure I had everything. "See you later."

"I'll be here," he said, smiling brightly and waving. I just chuckled before walking out of the front door.
