Grady Memorial Hospital

Atlanta, Georgia

Miranda Johnson sits on the hospital bed in her labor and delivery room, as she writes inside of a baby book in the light shade of pink. Her long, wavy, brown hair is pulled up in a messy bun, as her light hazel eyes stay glued to her task at hand. The paleness of her skin glistens in sweat, as she decides to go through contractions without any medications. Sitting on a chair next to the bed, with his head in his hands, is Samuel Johnson. His dirty blonde hair is a mess on his head, as he has stressfully run his fingers through it from time to time.

His dark blue eyes are fixed on the floor beneath him, as both he and his wife sit at this moment. Just six months ago, Miranda had rushed to her husband's side beaming over the fact that she could possibly be pregnant again. After trying to have children for a little over six years, failing to conceive, and having four miscarriages during that time, they deserved this moment. She still remembers all of the heartaches she felt when she miscarried her babies, constantly blaming herself for the reason they left so soon. She remembers staying up late almost every night, praying and hoping that she'd be able to have a baby to call hers someday.

The sheer panic and fear she felt when she saw those two pink lines six months ago, as she thought she'd lose this baby too, was enough for her to break down. Although she had been happy to fall pregnant again, the fear of miscarrying another one had been overwhelming. Samuel has drug Miranda to every doctor's appointment to make sure this pregnancy has gone well, with no complications. He was ready to become a father to a son, for he wanted someone to teach the ropes of hunting, fishing, and throwing a football. The moment they found out that their baby was going to be a girl, all of his hopes and dreams came crashing down.

The doctors had warned the married couple that the baby could come early, due to the birth defect that was developing within the baby. So when Miranda went into labor at six months and four days, it didn't come much to a surprise. Now, they sit in a hospital room patiently waiting for their daughters' arrival. Miranda sits so elegantly on the hospital bed, writing neatly into the baby book she has created for her little girl. She is excited to become a mother, but she is more excited to see all the milestones her precious baby girl will reach throughout her lifetime.

Samuel looks up at his wife, a burning rage within his own mind as he battles the thought of having a daughter over a son. All he ever wanted was a house full of little boys, so he could teach them the ropes of becoming a man as their mother cleans and cooks and takes care of all of them. He wanted to raise his boys to be just like him, how his father had raised him when he was a child. Samuel even wanted to force his sons to join the military, much like his father had. His family line had been filled with military men and women, being honored by the country he lived in all his life.
