The Tenors all whooped excitedly as Matt awkwardly made his way towards them, well all of them except Matthias. "You can stand in between Matthias and Darren," said Mr Yong.
Matthias wanted to scream. He wanted to strangle Matt and just shout "F*ck off!" into that pretty face and watch his eyelashes fall off. He wanted to punch this guy ten, no, ten thousand times for every infuriating action he had done to bring him to this exact moment.
But Matthias did nothing. He couldn't bring himself to waste energy on such a piece of crap.
He had just about enough of Matt. First of all this guy sits with the 'cool kids' that already annoy him enough with their dumb jokes in class, then he joins his CCA, sits beside him during Level-Position, has pink hair (that Matthias had seen when Matt took off his hood)--gosh Matthias didn't like pink at all. Why Aurora was so obsessed with that odd shade of colour, he had no idea. Then Matt joins his section, and to top it all off, Matt's standing between him and Darren, his best bud.
Matthias prayed that there wouldn't be sectionals, though the day pretty much just went in the opposite direction of everything that would be good in Matthias' life. What's new?
During sectionals, each section went into separate rooms to learn their part of a song before combining the entire song. This would have been fun, hanging out with the Tenors usually was, but with Matt around, something was off. It's not like I don't try to be his friend. Wait. No, it is.
Matthias consolidated his thoughts as he walked into the classroom that the Tenors were going to use for sectionals. He just didn't like Matt because he was a 'cool kid' that was it right? What had Matt ever done to him? Matthias put down his guard for a while. Then sectionals began.
It was fine, everything was good. Matt was actually quite a good singer. He didn't make sectionals any worse than they usually were, which Matthias saw as an absolute win. "Alright, good job guys, five-minute break," Darren announced.
As usual, everyone started jamming to meme songs or Minecraft parodies. Matt knew these songs, which was epic. He would sing along and even initiate some songs. Even Darren, who normally dispised such 'cool kids' didn't have a problem with this guy.
Then, Matthias caught Matt's eyes, and suddenly the room temperature dropped to below freezing. Matt's eyes glowed red. His face turned into dark smoke and leapt out at him, snapping its shark-like demon teeth. It all happened so fast. Shorter than a split second, but Matthias saw it. He felt it.
But perhaps Matthias was drunk, or sleep-deprived because the next moment Matt's face was all pretty-boy again and Matt just smiled awkwardly at Matthias, embarrassed for having looked him in the eye.
"Alright, let's get back to sectionals."
Finally, they finished the song and it was 4.30 p.m. just in time. Everyone clapped and headed back to the PA1 to wait while the other sections finished up.
When everyone was back in the PA1, Mr Yong asked each section where they had stopped learning the song. Everyone finished learning the song except sopranos. Matthias glanced over at the Sopranos. They all seemed annoyed and grouchy. Geez, they really needed to sort out their sectionals. Lately, they've been learning songs quite slowly compared to the other sections.
Mr Yong took a sharp breath and pushed back his hair with his hand. "Okay everyone, just sing until you self-destruct."
They finished the whole song but the Sopranos had stopped three quarters through. Mr Yong sighed. "Alto, Tenor, Bass, sit down."
"Why do you think you were slower than the rest of the choir?" Mr Yong was on the verge of exploding. "Hey, I asked you a question, can someone give me an answer? The other sections could finish why couldn't you?"
Matthias' thoughts wandered. He was thirteen. He remembered when his friends still consisted of this bunch of smart boys. They did their work and stayed back after school to game together. He wondered again why he left them.
The voices of the Sopranos were just a soft hum now. No, he didn't leave. Everyone just started breaking away. Julian went to join the cool kids (urgh), Arthur just was not sociable enough to stay. All that guy cared about was his grades. He also had changed over the years. He was no longer innocent and gullible. Now he swore when he pleased and was often sceptical of what he was told.
The three other boys broke away and formed their own group, though Matthias was still quite close with them until last year. One of them had moved to another school and the other two were now in another class together. He wondered if they were still friends. Those two used to be one of the greatest teams. They worked extremely well together and always did great jobs on group projects when they were in the same group. Though, now in their new class, there were probably a lot of other better teammates for them to choose from. But Matthias wasn't in their class, so he wouldn't know. Not like he cared.
"Oh, Matthias you take Geography?" Matt's voice sounded far away.
"Uh. What? Yes. Why?"
"Oh Darren was just telling me about how the O' Level system works, which is pretty much like GCSE, and he mentioned humanities. He takes History, but I take Geography, so he told me you take Geography too."
"Uh, okay," responded Matthias half-heartedly.
"Say, what were you thinking about?"
"Nothing." Matthias wanted to tell Matt that it was none of his business anyway, but that would take too much effort.
Matt pursed his lips. "Okay."
Then, everything went dark.
Matt blinked. Sunlight still poured in from the windows, but all the lights had turned off. A wave of muttering passed through the choir. Matthias couldn't help but wonder why the blackout had happened just as he shut Matt off. Yeah, he was definitely drunk today. Matthias pushed that thought aside.
Karen ran out of the PA1 and returned with Ms Wong.
"Choir we will be going to the Sky Bridge," announced Karen. The choir groaned unapprovingly. Many choir members did not like the idea of singing in the open. Especially in school, where students could judge them.
Ms Wong stepped forward. "Unless you all want to stay here in the PA1, the air-conditioning has shut off so it's only a matter of minutes before it gets extremely stuffy in here."
The choir started to trickle out of the PA1 and made their way to the sky bridge. There, they combined the song, and Mr Yong made the choir take note of certain areas of improvement. It wasn't long later that the choir was dismissed.
As Matthias helped the quartermaster team put the equipment back in the storage room, he noticed Matt staring at him as he left the PA1. Matthias felt wrong, like something about Matt's gaze was unsettling, but he couldn't put his finger on it.
