The blonde woman wondered around camp in Morristown Headquarters—she was in much of a rush, but then again, when was she not. Her dress wrapped around her perfectly though it certainly wasn't too rich—her face at this moment was quite serious but nonetheless, attractive. She was very beautiful , some might even say gorgeous under some dirt that'd been smudged onto her skin from all the helping and moving from place to place. She stopped moving only to scan the area and make sure she was going the right way—she was not, her mind was filled with constant worries about where to go, who's hurt, who's sick, and how to help. She presumed to right and continued her quick pace to where she'd been needed. She made her way into the medical tent, a tent with all the ill and wounded. She'd been longing to be a doctor, ever since she saw her father ( a doctor) save a man's life—and with the war's conflict they were very much in need. But she wasn't a doctor, she was a nurse, a doctor's assistant, her skills were undeniably better than the doctor's. Still, women couldn't do the job with all the men that volunteered with no experience , so you settle with being nurse—alright.
"Lewis!"
The doctor called out to the Anne—motioning for her to come towards him with one hand.
She obeyed and was at his side almost immediately, she didn't like the idea of someone else being in charge of her but she must respect that idea to stay in camp.
"Yes, sir, how may I be of assistance."
Anne replied respectfully, cupping her hands together and awaiting further instructions.
"Scalpel."
He said very plainly, paying no attention to her and holding out his hand to receive the tool.
She nodded and grabbed the scalpel, handing it to him and watching him do his work. Another burden of being a nurse with far superior skills than your doctor is watching what he does wrong.
'You're cutting the wrong way..'
She would think to herself as she watched him and watched the man suffer because of his carelessness. It wasn't long until the wound was treated 'correctly' and her assistance was no longer needed.
Night followed and Anne was left outside with other nurses who gossiped over certain soldiers, not as much as the camp followers but most definitely plenty. The men were inside drinking and drunkly singing drinking ballads which could be heard from outside and possibly a mile away.
'Possibly enough to lure a thief of some sort or in the worst case, a redcoat'
She thought as she carefully listened to a horses gallops, she swallowed the lump in her throat that'd kept her worried for who may be coming. Her curiosity didn't last long because from the dark emerged a tall man who sat on his horse with strict posture. The ladies' gossip had ended abruptly and they all turned their heads to the general. He dismounted his horse almost impeccably and walked towards the house the singing could be heard from. The women's eyes followed him and they muttered things around the sort of:
"It's Washington"
"He's much taller than I've been told.."
"Seems strong too, eh?"
Though Washington did his work in this very camp, it would be quite rare to see him so close. The war had everyone caught up in their own work, especially George. Whenever Anne managed to get even a slight look at him, a small smile would spread across her face and any doubts or lost hope would be no more, he had that effect on the patriots.
"Ladies, I can't imagine there's much left to wait for, night won't last forever. I believe it's time to off to bed."
Lewis suggested when she turned back to the women, the night couldn't get any better (considering they'd seen such a man).
"You do that, 'Young Annie' , I'll wait here and see if I land myself a drunk lad to care for me tonight"
One of the nurses snickered as the other women laughed.
"Sleep well."
Anne chuckled at the old nurse's comment.
She walked back to her tent, the only walk of the day where she wasn't rushed. The stars in the sky shine bright and she enjoyed their light—thought it better than candles. She didn't fall asleep until after 10 minutes of laying on her bed and staring at the ceiling.
