2: the new boy’s interest

“Zara Lazy Malik, wake up, wake up.” My brother Yusuf’s voice sang close to my ears. I clutched my blankets forcefully and tried to ignore his pestering voice, but I couldn’t do that, for, first, he was being relentless and second, he was being loud and squeaky.

“Yusuf, if you stand here another minute, mom and dad won’t be grandparents until I marry.” I peeked through my eyes with a big yawn. It was my way of threatening him and it always helped. He scurried back and then planted his hands on his hips, looking much like the old lady next door.

“You’re so cruel, you know that sis?” He asked before marching away, but not before perfectly dropping a bomb over my head.

“If you have to reach the school in time by foot, you’ll wake up now. I am going to go now. I have football practice and Leroy’s ride is down!”

Thank you brother dearest, you’re so kind! Not…

I woke up hurriedly and marched inside the bathroom like a wind. I brushed, bathed and dressed in my long yellow shirt that reached upto my knee and picked my dark blue loose pants. I paired it with my navy-blue head cover before shuffling out of my room.

“Assalamu Alaikkum, mama.” I kissed her hurriedly as she replied to my greetings, snagged an apple and started running towards the bus stop.  The school was thirty minutes by walk and I was such a lazy bum to walk all the way.

Sally, a classmate greeted me with a pleasant smile. I greeted her with a small wave as I joined her in the long rows of waiting mobs for the bus.

“Hey Zara, how’s your day?” She smiled pleasantly. She was one of those nice girls who always treated everyone with respect. I admired her and she was a whiz kid.

“Nothing remarkable. If anything, it’s worse. My brother ditched me to pick his friend up and I have to run all the way to the bus stop.” I sulked and she smiled kindly at me with a small pat on my back. As we talked, the bus arrived. We ran all the way to the back and slumped on the back seat.

When I entered the school, I was immediately greeted by Lilith Johnson; she was the one you called as Queen Bee, a top class annoying girl with nose stuck high in the air. You could simply say she was a top-notch B… See, I hated cursing and using rude words and I was trying so bad not to use it at all.

“Hello freak. How’s your day? Hope its hell like every other day. Am I right, low class tramp?” See, the B word hung close in the tip of my tongue, forcing itself out. But I held it back. I hitched my back pack higher and adjusted my scarf neatly around my neck before looking up at her with a boring yawn.

Her eyes twitched at my show of obvious nonchalance and she fisted her palms on the side. She then clasped her claws over the water bottle in her backpack and pulled it out, drinking it like she was just finishing a marathon. Talk about over-acting!!!

“Nice to meet you too, Lilith,” I strode past her, my black shoes making a soft thump on the floor. I heard her stomping in the opposite direction and an amused smile made my face grew brighter.

“What are you smiling at girlfriend?” Anna clasped me by my arms and then pulled my arms inside hers, an act of friendship we followed for so long.
