I watched as my father paid the man, he gave him almost all of the money we had earned. "Is this it" the man said to my father, chucking the bag of gold coins from one hand to the other. "yes sir, business has been slow recently" my father explained to him in a shaky voice. "well, being the... what do they call it, ah yes. being the Merciful man I am, I guess I can accept this" the man walked over to my father, suddenly he was holding my father by the throat, "but next time, don't expect such lenience" my father let out a strangled yes. the man dropped him and walked out of our store. "you can come out now" my father said in a weak voice, I slowly opened the doors to the cupboard I was hiding in, my mother and older brother were right behind me. I looked at my father, getting up from the floor. "why do you pay that man father, he's just a lowly pirate" I questioned. "because if we didn't, he would take more than just our money" my father stated, coming over to me and patting my head. I swatted his hand away "father please, I'm almost 16, I'm no child anymore" I pouted, he laughed along with my mother and older brother. "Come on, its time to celebrate Charlie's birthday" my mother said leading us into the kitchen. it was my brothers birthday, he was 18 today, which meant that he could finally choose his career, we all expected him to go to the city and work for the police, or be a royal guard for the royal family. as we celebrated, I couldn't help notice the look of fear in his eyes. It seemed like I was the only on who noticed, so I decided to stay quiet and enjoy this happy time, as it was a rare occurrence for our family.
As the night wore on, the candles on the wall started to flicker and die out. "seems its time for bed, we have a big day ahead of us" my father stated. I ran to mine and Charlie's room. our house wasn't very big, we had the lower floor which was our fathers shop, and then the top floor which had 4 rooms, 2 bedrooms and a kitchen and dining area. I guess that this wasn't such a bad place to live, we had only moved in here a couple of weeks ago, we moved from the outskirts of the city, from our 1 bedroom 1 kitchen area house. we now lived by the docks, which was a much better place, it smelled about the same but now we got more customers, and we could usually all eat each week. I layers in bed, snuggling up to my blanket, it was much warmer than my previous one which had holes in it and smelled of pee. I was dozing off when I heard the door open, I looked up at Charlie as he walked over to my bed. "hey there sis, did I wake you?" he questioned. I shook my head no. "Alright, I just wanted to say that in going to miss you when I leave" he said with his head down. I sat up and wrapped my arms around him. "you can come visit can't you" I asked him. he leaned back "maybe" he said giving me a smile. he stood up and went to his bed.

It had been a week since Charlie's birthday and nothing eventful had happened. except Charlie did look more nervous. I was lying in bed, thinking about how we could earn more money so that father could buy me some sweets, when Charlie walked over to my bed "hey sis, listen, can you stay out of the house for a bit tomorrow" he asked. I looked at him strangely "why" I questioned, sitting up. "here take this and go buy some sweets tomorrow alright" he handed me a silver coin. i nodded my head so fast I was afraid it would fall off. I wasn't going to question him, my mind full of thoughts on what sweets I was going to buy, as I had only had some once in my life. he smiled at me and then went to bed, I put the coin under my thin pillow and went to sleep, hoping tomorrow would come faster.
At last it was morning. I got dressed in a red skirt that went down to my feet, and a white button up shirt, the sleeves rolled up. my brown hair was down, going to the middle of my back. I grabbed the silver coin from under my pillow and rushed out the door, calling to my father saying I was going out. I was out if the house before he could respond. I walked down the street, people passing me by. the stone and wooden stores looking worn out from being so close to the ocean. I turned onto one of the busiest streets, people walking, carts drawn by horses moving the best they could on the stone brick paths. I walked to the sweets shop, I looked through the window at all the delicious sweets just asking to be eaten by me. I walked through the door and picked out the cheapest one I could, then I got as much of it as I could with the silver coin.
