This story was told in explanation to his song Annie.
A while back Mac, Kiera and a band mate of his used to live together. The way he told the story seemed as if he and Kiera moved in with the band mate and that maybe there were even two band mates but what was important is that they had a cat. She was a tiny little runt of her family and she would sleep on the carpet down at everyone's feet and follow everyone around. Mac loved her. She was red and beautiful. One day a bright cherry red car came speeding down the road for no reason at all and Annie got ran over. She was bleeding everywhere so they took her inside and she died. I assume afterwards he wrote the song about her or maybe it was years after the incident but Mac did admit that while telling the story he'd decided that the song Annie was about her in the moment, even though he previously wasn't sure.
Art is weird that way.
