Someone is watching her. Katherine is combing her hair, and she freezes, the brush half way down her hair, to look in the corner of the mirror. Darcy's eyes are pinned to the base of her throat.

Darcy and Katherine's eyes meet.

"I didn't see anything," Darcy says quickly.

Katherine fumbles with the buttons of her shirt, her eyes widening in a panic. Oh no. Am I going to have to-

"Is it..." Darcy says. "Someone I know?"

Katherine stares at Darcy.

"You don't have to worry," Darcy says. "I won't tell anyone."

"You won't?"

"Of course I won't. And you don't have to button your shirt up like that. I'll get you some makeup to cover the hickey up."

"Hickey? I-" Katherine blinks, shaking her head. "I'm going to get some food." She crosses the room, unable to leave fast enough. Atleast, until she sees what's outside her door. Or more specifically, who's at her door.

Darko leans against the opposite wall, the full force of his stare on her. He pushes off against the wall, standing up straight. "Darko," Katherine says, "Uh, how long have you been standing there?"

"Long enough."

Katherine smiles. "You could've knocked."

"What were you doing in the headmasters office last night?"

Her smile fades. "That's none of your business."

Darko tilts his head, stepping forward. "If it involves my brother, it is."

Katherine takes a step backwards and hits the wall. "Then it's a good thing it didn't," she says.

"That's funny."

"Really."

"Because I talked to the receptionist, and she seemed to think you did know something." Katherine blinks. "It was a mistake," she repeats. She tries to walk away, but Darko stands firm in front of her, blocking her path.

"This is a matter of life and death," he says.

"Darko," she says, staring at him, "I'm pretty sure your brother is, uh..."

Darko raises his eyebrows, daring her to say it.

"Not... super... alive?"

His eyes flicker to the ceiling. "I'm not talking about my brother. Once I find whoever did this, I'm going to kill them. It's a matter of their life and death."

Katherine studies Darko. His black hair is unkempt and there are bags under his eyes. Though his glare is steady, there's something unhinged behind his stare. A look that made him look crazy enough to actually believe what he was saying.

"You think you can kill a vampire?" Katherine says quietly. "You have no idea what you're up against."

"What would you know about vampires?"

Katherine shakes her head. "I'm hungry. I'm going to breakfast." But Darko grabs her wrist before she can take another step. "Like hell you are," he growls.

"What do you want me to say?" Katherine says.

"Do you know a vampire?"

"What? I told you-"

"Do you know something about the field trip?"

"I don't know anything!"

Darko's voice is the opposite of Katherine's: cool and steady. "And I'm telling you I think you're a liar."
