Chapter Four: Denim Jackets

Start from the beginning

"Jacket looks better on you than me I suppose." A rough voice whispered to me before Billy disappeared out the door as quickly as he came. I sat up in my desk shocked as the teacher yelled at him to come back into the room. He winked at me before disappearing out of view.

"Okay so what the fuck?" Nancy whispered to me.

"I don't know." I said over lunch to Nancy. The cafeteria was busy and loud so we were free to talk about the earlier events of the day.

"What do you MEAN you don't know Henderson? You just don't know how or when you and Billy Hargrove started hanging out? Or maybe you don't know when he gave you his jacket?" Nancy asked interrogating me.

"We don't hang out! He left it at my house and that kid ruined my jacket earlier!"

"Why was he at your house?"

I was torn between telling my bestfriend everything and keeping Billy's secret.

"He got in a fight. He just happened to be walking past my house and I offered him some ice for his big ass head." I replied defensively.

All of a sudden Nancy bust out laughing. "You think he's hot." She stated in a matter-of-fact tone.

"I do NOT!" I responded trying to make myself sound disgusted.

"Oh okay Henderson you so totally want in his pants because ONE you would not be wearing his jacket if you didn't. You'd rather go naked if you hated him so much. And TWO you wouldn't be saying such mean things about him if you didn't because you can't flirt for the life of you!" She said reaching over and pinching my arm accusingly.

"No. You're wrong." I replied leaning back and away from her.

"Uhuh." She said unimpressed.

"Unbelievable!" I said laughing at her as I stood up to throw my trash away.

"Say what you want but when you end up fucking him I totally called it!"

"NANCY!" I gasped as I practically ran out of the lunchroom trying to escape her questions.

On my walk back home I hummed to myself while lightly kicking at the leaves on the ground. It hadn't been such a bad day considering. Not until I heard the roar of a familiar engine come speeding down the street. The all too familiar blue camaro came to a sudden stop in front of me once again. The window slowly rolled down revealing Billy in a black leather jacket.

"Do you want something?" I casually called out still walking and kicking leaves.

"Not particularly. You want a ride or not?"

"Hm I suppose I could but you know, my mom told me not to get in the car with strangers!" I replied still walking down the road. He slowly drove next to me.

"Uhuh okay. Well the names Billy. Billy Hargrove. We've met once or twice." He replied sarcastically. "Now we aren't strangers so get in."

I rolled my eyes at him but gladly took the free ride home. As soon as the door slammed shut he turned his music all the way up and sped down the street. He tapped his fingers along to the music on his steering wheel and I couldn't help but laugh at him. He leaned forward to turn down the music. "What's so funny?"

"You."

"Why's that?" He said raising an eyebrow at me.

"You happen to be very mean during the school day but off school property you seem to act like a normal functioning human being." I replied poking his cheek to irritate him. He rolled his eyes at me and turned the music back up, clearly shutting down the conversation. He pulled up in front of my house and let me out without saying anything.

"Thank you." I mention to him.

He nods slightly in response.

"You mad?" I ask him as I lean against his car door. He didn't reply and noticing that his cold demeanor reappeared I decided not to test him and shut the door so I could go inside. I walked up the steps not looking back at him. Unlocking the door and stepping in I notice that I haven't heard him drive off yet so I slam the door shut and quickly look through the peep hole. He didn't restart the car or begin to drive off until he was sure the door was fully shut and locked behind me.
