Tulsa, Oklahoma
1965
It was another day sleeping on the lot. Another day with our parents disowning us. Another day where we put our lives at risk. Johnny and I have been working our asses off only to be paid minimum wage and a few tips here and there. I work at a small diner near the DX, where Johnny works at. Every night I come back to the lot after work and put the money that we earned that day into a small jar. I always count the cash, hoping we have enough money to rent a small apartment.
"$23.38." I sighed.
"Don't worry Jen, we'll find a place sometime," Johnny said, trying to cheer me up.
"I'm sick and tired of all of this. I wish we would have enough money to afford a place. I wish I had a room, nice and cozy, where I can invite all my friends over. I wish for everything good to happen, and it's not coming true! Why do the socs get everything, and we get nothing? It's bullshit!" I said.
"Jen, don't be like that..." Johnny said.
"Well, I can't always be happy-go-lucky like Soda is." I talked back.
"well, can you at least be happy that we aren't dead yet? We have been living like this for a while now, and if you were-"
"Don't compare other people to this situation! They don't know what we're going through!" I yelled.
It was silent for a long time. It was the first time we ever fought over something.
"you know what, you're only 13 years old. You shouldn't be in this situation."
"I'm not 13 Johnny. I've been 14 for about two weeks now," I said.
"You need to start living with Ponyboy and Darry. You'll be happier with them and not me." Johnny said.
"what? I can't live with them! why can't I live with you?" I said. Tears started to form out of my eyes.
"'Cause you act like you don't want me in your life," Johnny said.
"But I do want you in my life! I do! You're my brother, Johnny!" I cried.
I heard some car screeching and knew some drunk socs were trying to get us.
"You better get to Ponys house now. run. ill be hiding at the back of the lot." Johnny yelled.
I ran. I ran. I can't believe it was happening. It was a cold night with high winds. The wind blew my hair in my face, which made it hard to see. I tried pushing it back, but the winds were too high. I must've made a mistake because I was on the opposite side of the neighborhood, and not at The Curtis'. by this time I ran out of breath and started walking.
"Hey miss, what are you doing here all alone?" a voice said.
I turned around and saw two drunk socs following me with their mustang.
"Shit," I mumbled.
"wait, come back here." one of them said.
I started to pick up my speed. I saw Pony's house in the distance.
"I need to be somewhere," I said.
One soc grabbed my hand. He started to pull me closer to his body .
"Why don't we have some fun before you leave?"
