Prologue

I swooped down, spraying white-hot plumes of fire at the people below. I heard the strangled cries of people burning, the raspy coughs as they choked in my smoke. I had no problem killing these Elves. They killed my family. My kin. They stole my home, Greenwood, and claimed it as their own.

It was because of them I suffered from this horrid curse. Because of them I turned into a dragon every fortnight, forever forced to obey evil's will. Because of them the last of the Laiquendi (Green-Elves) were utterly destroyed.

Except for me.

I looked to the sky. Dawn would be coming soon. The night would leave, along with my dragon form. The Silvan Elves were trying to shoot me with their bows and arrows, but my hide was impenetrable. The arrows simply bounced off my scales and back down. I hissed fire at a group who were preparing to shoot. They fried to a crisp, dead.

The sun would be rising in a few minutes. Most of the Elves had fled.

But there was this one Elf, one Elf with a spark in his eye, who prepared himself with his sword and shield. Something about him caught my eye. Maybe it was is long blonde hair, his brave blue eyes, that made me not want to hurt him.

I didn't mean to. I really didn't.

I looked to the sun. It would be rising in a couple of seconds. I blew one last spray of fire, not looking at who was below.

That was when I heard the bloodcurdling scream, and the thud of a body slamming the ground. I looked down to see the Elf writhing in the dirt, part of his face gone. A pang of guilt hit my heart.

I flew towards the mountains, avoiding the sun's first rays. As soon as the light hit my face, I returned to my Elf form in a puff of smoke and tumbled towards the ground, landing with a thump.

I coughed in the smoke, and hauled myself to my feet. Looking up through my extended Elf vision, I saw the Elf I had hit. I got up and ran with whatever energy I could muster towards him. Then I stopped, halfway to him.

Why was I going to help him? He was a Silvan Elf. They had destroyed my family.

But I couldn't leave him to die when I was the only one who could heal him.

I ran towards him and collapsed to my knees at his side. Another elf, older, with brown hair and brown eyes, was already there checking his pulse. "Thranduil," he said softly.

So that was his name. Thranduil.

Gently, I lifted the cloth that the other elf had put on his face. I winced at the sight.

There was blood everywhere, and where his left cheek should have been, there was nothing. His eye was burned; he would probably be blind.

"I can put a spell on him," I whispered. "To hide the scars."

I looked to the other elf, who was studying me carefully. "Go ahead," he said slowly.

Taking a breath, I circled my hand in mid air over his face. A blue mist started to form, and the blood dissolved into it. Now that the blood was gotten rid of, I began chanting my spell.

"Menno o nin na hon,

i eliad ennen annin,

hon leitho o ngurth.

Thranduil Lasto beth nin,

tolo dan nan galad."

The scars began to fade, his normal pale skin coming in and replacing it. He would bear those scars forever, but no one would be able to see them unless he elected to show it to them. "Take him back to his home," I said, helping the other elf haul the wounded elf up onto a horse. He got on behind him. "He should wake in 4 to 6 days," I said.

"Thank you, my lady," he said. "I am Lord Elrond of Rivendell. Ae boe i le eliathon, im tulithon," he said. I nodded and he rode off.

I felt tears welling up in my eyes. I did this to him. I scarred him forever. I never usually felt guilty about my victims, but now shame settled over me like a wave. Unable to face the truth, I did what I did best - I fled, with one word echoing in my mind.

Thranduil.
