Colt pov
I had been up since before dawn, and on this day the sun decided that it was going to beat down on my car directly and make it a human toaster. I had gotten my list of chores I had to do for Ms.White and was falling behind schedule. I was hoping I could drop off her food and do a few things around the ranch before picking up lunch. I quickly pulled into her long winding driveway. Trees were at either end lining the path, everyone knew of her house, he had the biggest one within 100 miles yet was one of the least snobbish people I'd ever met. I was pulling around her fountain when I saw a white BMW parked upfront. I hadn't even seen the vehicle before, and it was too nice to be anyone in town. I didn't pay any mind to it I had things I had to get done. I pulled to the side so that I could hopefully deliver her groceries without interrupting. However as soon as I opened the door I could hear arguing, and honestly, that was the first I'd heard Ms.white ever raise her voice. She was no angel but she was the type to have quiet anger.
"I still don't understand why you'd come here." She said in a strong voice, making it very clear she didn't appreciate her just showing up clearly uninvited. I propped the screen door open so I could quickly carry all the food in and hurry out. I had no interest in getting into Ms.White issues they were far out of my world. Not to say I didn't care for her, I just knew that she wouldn't want anyone to know her business, including me. She was the type of woman that hardly spoke of the past, for as long as I've known her she has never spoken of her childhood or her family at all.
"Where else would I go?" The women raising her voice ever so slightly, sounding worried almost scared. "I know this isn't ideal, trust me, but I panicked. I didn't know what to do, I just knew I didn't want to be around her." They were both quiet for a moment, even I stopped. The air felt thicker like I was on top of a mountain.
"Why did I come to mind?" Ms.White said a little annoyed but a hint of understanding. Which only made me more confused.
"...because this was the only place I've ever felt...free." I couldn't help but chuckle to myself a bit, she sounded so dramatic. I could hear how serious her tone was but I knew if Ms.White was spending the time to argue with her she wasn't just anyone. After a short moment she spoke and at this point, I was intrigued by what she had to say. I had gotten the last of groceries inside and start to put them away.
"Free huh well I hope you don't think you are staying here for free-" She dared to cut her off.
"I'm cut off remember, I don't have money to give you." She sounded shocked and very much snobby, I just rolled my eyes.
"If you are going to live here you are pulling your weight." I'm guessing she was about to be cut off again so she raised her voice just below a shout. "You are not just going to treat this time like a vacation."
"What do you want from me!" She snapped, before saying. "You want me to have a job or something?" She said almost disgusted, and I couldn't help but also feel the same because I knew this town and the last thing this place needed was a high-class uptight girl whos so far up her own ass that she has no idea other people exist other than her.
"Either that or you go home, I won't let you just sit around and mope all day." There was a loud sigh and probably an eye roll but I was around the corner still listening in from the kitchen putting away the beans.
"So what do you want me to do shoved cow shit all day?" I was ready to get popcorn and settle in because it was about to get good.
"Firstly you will do whatever I god damn tell you to, secondly don't go near my animals- if so much as one thing is out of place in there you will be held accountable." I didn't know she could be this cold and sound so empty before. She was normally a strong woman but just being around this other person made her uncomfortable.
"That's not fair-" She bit her own tongue and took a deep breath. "What do you want me to do?" Her tone was different, she was trying her best not to lose it, I didn't know what happened to her but she was desperate.
"Find a job-" She cut herself off. "Come with me." I heard footsteps quickly approaching my way and I said a quick little prayer hoping I wasn't about to get roped into this mess. "Colt." Dammit.
"Yes." I pushed my lips together and turned around from putting up the rice.
"This is my granddaughter, Natalie." My eyes nearly fell out of my head looking at her, with her fancy red bottom heels, the double G belt, a necklace that just said, Prada. "I'm gonna need you to show her around town and get her applications." I never even knew she even had a daughter.
"I still have to get the feed out and fix the fence-" She cut me off and I could see she needed me to do this.
"I got all of that." Prada didn't say a word, she was still in shock looking at me. She said basically shoving us out the door near my car and slamming the door behind us. I had never seen her that flustered.
"Can that even make it to town?" She spoke up. I just smiled through it. "We should take mine it's a hell of a lot better."
"If you don't feel comfortable in my truck you can always walk." She huffed and I merely smirked getting into the driver's seat.
"My names Natalie's by the way." I didn't ask because I didn't care.
"Colt." I kept it short not wanting to talk, I could take one look and know she was just passing through.
