"Kalani, we've got to go, now," my brother called as I stuffed as much cash as I could into my bra.
"I'm coming, one second," I said while I stood up and bolted to the door where he was.
The sound of the alarm ringing in my ears and the flashing red coming from the wailing sirens don't distract me from sprinting to the window that withholds our escape. I hear gunshots and footsteps behind us get closer and the smell of nicotine slowly disappears as I jump.
Leaves are falling
Leaves are falling
The leaves are falling
My mother singing me that song rings through my ears as the memories of her distant voice come back and flood my head as a burst dam would.
Baby, I know that you didn't choose to be a part of this life, but it chose you. You must fight for your life because one day, I won't be here. Your brother and you must fight to keep yourselves sane in this crazy world. Please, stay my little leaf.
I felt like a little leaf in the fresh crisp fall. Drifting, farther and farther away from reality and more into this sick world of pain, crime, sorrow, and death. That's at least the world that I live in.
I land on my feet with a thud and am immediately pulled into the back of the all familiar truck.
"That was close you idiot," Nathan says as he smacks the back of my head and speeds off into the night.
"I know, but as you say, every last drop counts," I tease and begin pulling out the cash that I stuffed into my bra earlier.
"Do you seriously have to do that right now," he groaned and kept his eyes on the road.
"Yes, just have to count tonight's earnings. You know, we still could have gotten more."
"Yeah, if we wanted to get our heads blown off. The amount we stole from that company is such a large amount to us but to them, it's less than one percent."
"Yeah, yeah. Are we going to stop by Jamie's tonight?"
"Why do you just want to see your best friend don't you," he said with a devilish smirk on his face.
"Hey," I said slapping his arm," just because we dated once doesn't mean that I still like her. Plus, she has a boyfriend."
"Sure, we'll go, and speaking of, when are you going to get a boyfriend?"
"Whenever someone takes interest in me. I'll wait for the right one," I said, strapping on my high heels and fixing my lipgloss in the mirror.
"Lot's of guys take interest in you, Kalani, you are just extremely picky," he said while poking my side.
"I only want the best for me, nothing less," I said as I checked my makeup one last time.
"Only the best for my sis," my brother stated as he turned the truck off and opened his door.
I opened mine and the scent of alcohol and musk filled the air as the buzzing sign of "Jamie's" shown above the modern pub. People of all colors, races, and ethnicities came in and out either drunk as a skunk or ready to have a good time. The one thing about the pub that my best friend owned is that people of all colors, sexualities, and genders would be welcome. This place was also the hotspot for drug, prostitution, and weapon trade. It was basically a crime central.
My chunky heels clanked as I walked with my arm tucked in my brother's across the street to where all of the noise was coming from. My sparkly, short and strappy party dress moves as my curves do and my Gucci jewelry clanks on my neck and wrists as they move in one fluid motion.
