Greet and Meet

"Jazzie, are you listening to me?"

Jazzie glanced back at her best friend, Kayla. Kayla had been talking Jazzie's ear off, ever since they sat down to eat their ice cream cones on a park bench.

"I hear you," Jazzie said. She licked the chocolate out of the waffle cone.

"So, you agree to go with me to all the parties this year?" she asked. Her brown eyes widened as Jazzie hesitated for an answer.

"I don't have a choice in the matter, do I?"

She rolled her eyes playfully. "You act like I'm forcing you to go. I just want you to live a little and have some fun."

Jazzie sighed. "I know. Since it's our senior year, I'll try to get out more."

She smiled. "Good, because there's a party happening tonight. It's the party we have every year before we go back to school tomorrow."

Jazzie heard about all the crazy things that happened at the back to school parties. Jazzie suspected a lot of illegal things going on at these get-togethers. She regretted her decision the longer she pondered over it.

"And you expect me to go. You know my mom's not having that." It made Jazzie felt better, knowing that her mom was not going to approve of her going to a party, the night before the first day of school. She really didn't want to go anyway.

"Don't worry about it. I have a foolproof plan that's sure to work."

"Kayla, I don't know. It's a school night."

She scoffed. "I can't believe you just said that. Are you even a teenager?"

Jazzie narrowed her eyes. Kayla shook her head out of disbelief. She was always telling Jazzie that she seemed more like an adult than a teenager.

"Just to show you I am indeed a teenager, I will go to this party. But your plan better work."

"Of course it'll work. I'm a pro at this." She looked so proud of herself, for being able to fool her parents. How she never got caught amazed Jazzie.

"Is this party just for our class?" Jazzie asked. She watched some cute guys playing basketball.

"It's supposed to be. I'm sure some underclassmen will make their appearances known. They always do."

"What time are we going?"

"Around eleven o'clock. We don't want to show up too early."

"Does it really matter?" Jazzie asked. She was trying her best to understand Kayla's logic.

"Nobody shows up early to parties. It's taboo." Kayla said it like Jazzie should know that by now.

Kayla got up from her side of the bench and pulled Jazzie up to where she was now standing. "Let's go. We gotta a lot of work to do. She gave Jazzie the once over.

Jazzie really had to give Kayla her props. Kayla convinced Carolyn, Jazzie's mom, that they were going to have a sleepover so that they could be together for the first day of school. The whole time Jazzie was sweating bullets. She still was, as she packed her clothes for the party into her bag.

"Make sure you get a good night's rest. You don't want to be too tired your first day back," Carolyn said.

"I will...don't worry." Jazzie didn't like lying to her mom, but she couldn't back out of the party now. She couldn't just ditch Kayla. She made a promise.
