Camille sat in her room, staring out of the window. Right across was the window of her best friend, Rowan. Usually, at this time, they'd be pulling up the blinds and talking to each other cheerily and some times even dare to jump over to the other bedroom after dropping their moms a quick text.
But, today. It was different. The clouds above were as dark as the thoughts flowing through Camille's mind and the limited light created eerie shadows around.
However, Camille didn't mind. She welcomed darkness-it gave her a sort of hope that if it's really dark now it can only get lighter.
No, she wasn't one of those 'the glass is always half full' types. She was more 'the glass has less water than it can hold' types.
It was funny really because Rowan, who was just now returning home, was just the opposite. She hated the darkness. She was all sunshine and unicorns, daisies and moonlight.
Yet, here they were again, smiling at each other, opening the windows as they both open their mouths to speak.
"Hey." They said in unison.
Another proof of their strong bond.
They smiled again at each other.
For the first time there was an air of nervousness and unease around them for today they had both prepared confessions.
They did not know that they were both scared. They've been wanting to do this since they first met back in the seventh grade. Neither having the courage. Maybe this time...maybe...
Will they be able to tell them or will they give up just as they had when they went to prom together as friends?
Tomorrow, when college begins, will they go in hand in hand with a brand new relationship or will they walk in with shy strides as they've always been doing?
Rowan, she wanted this more than Camille. She could honestly say that Camille was the missing piece in her life. But, she wasn't sure if Camille felt the same. After all, look how different they were!
Where Camille saw deeper, darker scenes, Rowan saw vibrant colours and warmth. And that was also the reason that she felt they'd complete each other. But, she wondered if Camille, who's been her friend for over 7 years would feel the same. What if her own feelings were the reason she loses her best friend?
Camille? She was a dark ocean of hidden agony- at what? Even she didn't know. And Rowan showed her the better world when she saw black. To her, Rowan wasn't just any passing craze... She was everything. Everything. She was her sanity. For what reason? She didn't know this either.
All she knew was that Rowan was a necessity and she wasn't willing to lose her. But, what if when she confesses, Rowan is disgusted and she leaves? Did she really want to risk that?
Even after all that preparation... All the writing and revising of the words they would speak...
They didn't. They couldn't.
It could ruin them!
So, they gave up again.
Falling into a peaceful conversation as they always did mentally telling the other, "Why don't you ever see that I love you?"
