There are three types of merfolk.
Herbivore
Carnivore
Omnivore
They all are a part of the same species but are different breeds, as they evolved in different landscapes and environments and that sort, but they have roughly the same intelligence to communicate and start to live in communities like humans do.
There are two species of merfolk, ones that are legged and ones that have tails. They are still mermaids and can be of all the three types. However, there are other species also which I will go through in the book too: species which are different from the everyday merperson.
Once again, this is only fantasy and is how I personally picture mermaids and what they'd be like in a logical world. if it's not your vision then that's fine, but please don't type paragraphs in the comments if you plan it because it's pointless.
There are also venomous merfolk
But herbivorous cannot be venomous, only omnivorous and carnivorous. They have different bodies and I'll explain later.
