Small footsteps echoed in the long tunnel, splashing loudly in the water that encompassed the ground. A young girl, no older than four, ran like her life depended on it. Covered in dirt and grime, she looked like she walked out of a nightmare. Hair, as black as midnight, flew behind her in tangled strands and her eyes, so blue they couldn't possibly be natural, were wide with sheer panic. The young girl was exhausted but she knew if she stopped running even for a second, the horrifying beasts would surely get her. Her little footsteps faltered when she suddenly heard the telltale footsteps of the monsters that were chasing her which meant only one thing, they were gaining on her. 'Faster ' she thought as she willed herself to keep moving, pushing her legs to their limit. Slowly, the heavy footsteps of her pursuers faded away as if they were never there. Hope swelled in the child's heart, hope that she might escape and live to tell the tale. But that hope was crushed just as quickly. There , right where the young girl was running to, stood the monster that would surely haunt her dreams. Quickly, the young girl stopped and turned to run the other way, if only to temporarily evade the creature. She didn't fully grasp the gravity of the situation until right as she was about to run, another one of the horrifying creatures came into view from where she had been running. The thought that she was trapped with no way of escape came barrelling down on her. She had no choice but to give up. What could she, a small helpless child, do against two of these cruel monsters? Frozen with despair, the child put up no fight as one of the beasts threw a sack over her small head and threw her over his shouldered as if she really was nothing more than a sack.
The monsters having completed their task of catching the girl, head back to the rest of their people to see if they too completed their given task. As they reach the rendezous spot, they take note of smoke lifting into the air from a small village in the distance and their people waiting for them. No words need to be spoken, for the smoke and the black stains that now cover their people's clothes speak louder than words. The tasks has been completed and now its time to leave this forsaken place. But what are they leaving behind you ask? A village once full of laughter and peace now sat void of any noise. Instead bodies litter the ground, lifeless and covered in black. Homes burning bright in the night, but with no one to put them out. A ball sat amidst the dead, never again will a child play with it. Much like this once beautiful village, it will lay there abandoned and forgotten in history. Who did this you ask? What horrifying beasts would attack and destroy this sacred place like thieves in the night? Well, the answer is really quite simple. You might even laugh when you hear it, dumbfounded that you didn't realize it sooner. The monsters that took it upon themselves to destroy something so beautiful are ones you know well.
Humans.
